Banta was born in Cole County, Mo., March 2, 1866, being 68 years 9 months and 2 days old at his death at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 4. He came with his parents to Henry county when a small boy, residing on a farm near Clinton. He received his education in the grade schools, then came to Clinton where he attended Lamkin Academy following with two years at Hooper Institute at Clarksburg, Mo. He received his medical education at the renowned Vanderbilt College of Medicine at Nashville, Tenn, graduating with high honors. He began his practice of medicine in Christian Co., finally settling in Coal, where he practiced until the time of his passing. No night too cold, no storm too fierce for him to face when he was called. He administered to their needs in the same unselfish and generous way as was his custom. In the past two years the doctor's health had been failing, but until the last year, he insisted he should care for those who needed him. He was very patient in his sufferings, never complaining. Life seemed to hold no greater treasure than the cherished love and esteem of his friends. The last few months, the kindness and tireless efforts of his many friends to help him and comfort the family showed a life lived as his is more worthy than the worldly gains, which, after all, are only empty dollars. He was united in marriage to Miss Ora Tanner, February 19, 1905, who with one son, Harrold, who has a position in Kansas City, survives him. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. E. F. Snyder, Salt Lake City, and Miss Arta Banta, Sacramento, Calif.; three nephews, Knisley and Albert Banta, of Kansas City, Bowen Banta, South River, N.J., also two nieces, Miss Virginia Banta of Kansas City, Mrs. C. E. Reid of Manitou, Colo., besides a large number of friends, who mourn his passing. In the passing of Dr. Banta this county has lost a man who will be greatly missed, a fine doctor, a good neighbor and a faithful friend, and a devoted husband and father. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. F. Mitchell of Clinton at the Coal Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Thursday. The young people of the Church sang at the funeral. Burial was in Englewood under direction of Wilkinson Funeral Service. Pallbearers were: Howell Lewis, Ed Doss, W. F. Smith, Willis Shafto, Harold McGinness and Don McQueen.
