BUTZ OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== BUTZ, Anton "Uncle Tony" 1868 - 1937 Anton Butz died at his home 1 1/2 miles west of Garland the afternoon of December 29, 1937. After dinner, he had gone to the mail box for an expected letter from their daughter, Mrs. John Brann, of Mound City, Kans., which he gave to his wife and went into the living room where he sat down in a rocking chair. Mrs. Butz read the letter then went into the living room and asked her husband if he did not want to hear about their new granddaughter, but at his silence, she looked at him and realized that the spirit had quietly taken its flight and only the lifeless body remained. Anton Butz or "Uncle Tony" as many called him was born in Jackson County, Ill., December 24, 1868. His father and mother, who came from Germany, died when he was a small lad, leaving three small children who were reared by their aunts in separate homes. On October 13, 1891, Anton Butz and Miss Amanda Riess were united in marriage in Mascoutah, Ill. Seven children blessed this union, five dying in infancy. Tow survive: Mrs. Annie Grasher of Hartwell and Mrs. Bessie Brann. There are four grandchildren, Mildred Kerns, Lyle and Carol Grasher, and Sylvia Jean Brann. His daughter, Bessie, was unable to come. Besides his wife he is survived by a brother, Steve Butz and sister, Mrs. Josephine Wangler, both of Belleville, Ill., who were unable to come because of poor health. In the spring of 1892 Mr. and Mrs. Butz came to Henry County settling near Calhoun. Five years later they moved to their farm, 1 1/2 miles west of Garland. He took great pride in his farm and was always busy. He was an honest and upright man, highly respected by young and old. He had a smile and joke for everyone. He had enjoyed that day a nice visit with Montie Young, the merchant of Garland store, and other friends. He loved to play the accordion and often played for his friends. His children inherited his musical talent and likewise delight to play. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Garland church by Rev. A. S. Olsen. Burial was at Norris cemetery. Pallbearers were Oral and Emory George, Montie Young, Denver Crooks, Richard Setzer, Frank White, Bill Batschelet and a nephew, Fred Flora, of St. Louis. Mrs. Edgar Clark, Miss Anna Lumary, George Johnson and Charlie Crooks sang, When They Ring Dem Golden Bells and favorites of the deceased, Nearer, My God to The and The Old Rugged Cross.
