DARR OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== DARR, Martha "Mattie" E. WAUGH 1863 - 1931 Mrs. "Mattie" Darr passed from this life, Saturday night-April 25, at 11:15, (1931) after an illness of four months. Mrs. Darr was one of our most highly respected and useful citizens, having spent the greater part of her life in this community. She has a host of friends by whom she will be greatly missed. Martha Waugh, the daughter of J. W. and Mary Waugh, was born March 17th, 1863, in Montgomery county, Indiana, and came to Missouri with her parents, in early childhood and has been a resident of this vicinity every since. She was joined in wedlock to Edwin F. Darr Nov. 1st, 1882, and to this union were born three daughters and one son; Mrs. Edna Carpenter, Yakima, Wash; Mrs. Mabel Vance, Blairstown, Mo.; Mrs. Nellie Goodwin, Kansas City, Kans., and Paul H. Darr, Brenham, Texas. She leaves seven grandchildren, two of whom have preceded her in death. They were Forest Dan Goodwin and Margaret Ruth Goodwin. Those living are as follows; Mrs. Kenneth Stewart, Jakima, Wash; Mrs. Jess Thacker, Yakima, Wash; Mr. Raymond Vance, Tyler, Tex; Mr. Jean Edwin Vance, Blairstown, Mo.; Mr. Paul H. Darr, Brenham, Tex.; also one great grandson Kenneth Jr., Stewart, Yakima, Wash. The brothers and sisters are Wm. Waugh, Pampa, Fla (should be Texas), James H. Waugh, Blairstown, Mo.; E. R. Waugh, Blairstown, Mo.; Richard Waugh, Clarksville, Iowa, Mrs. L. L. Smith Urich, Mo; Mrs. James Adair, Chilhowee, Mo. She professed Christ and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church in early life and had taught the Ladies' Bible class for ten years. Funeral services, conducted by the pastor Rev. A. S. Humphrey were held at the Presbyterian Church at 1:20 Tuesday afternoon. The choir sang "When They Ring the Golden Bells," and "No Night There." Harry Gray sang, "My Mother's Face." Six nephews were pallbearers. The remains were laid at Carpenter Cemetery, Johnson Co. Mo. - The Clinton Eye, Apr. 1931: Mrs. Mattie Darr At Rest - The spirit of one of Henry County's most beloved women, Mrs. Mattie Darr went into eternity Saturday night, April 25th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Vance, near Norris. She had been suffering with heart trouble, dropsy, and complications several years, but was only seriously ill four months previous to her death. Her husband E. F. Darr, died four years ago and since that time she had been staying with her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Goodwin, in Kansas City but this year she became so very homesick that as soon as possible her daughter brought her to the home of the other daughter near Norris, where she spent her remaining days on earth. Mrs. Darr expressed the desire repeatedly that she wanted to die in Henry County among the people with whom she had spent so many years, and whom she loved. Mattie Waugh was born in Montgomery Co. Ind. about 68 years ago. She came with her parents, the late Mr & Mrs. John W. Waugh to Henry Co. in 1866, when they settled in the Norris neighborhood, and she lived there and in Blairstown the remainder of her life except a few months when she lived in Kansas City. Her beloved husband, the late E. F. Darr, ran a delivery stable in Blairstown for years, also for many years ran a daily hack line from Norris to Clinton taking freight, passengers and carrying Uncle Sam's mail for which he received $150 a year. Even in this time when so many people are complaining of the low wages, one can scarcely conceive of this, and it would be impossible to find a man to take a contract as mail carrier from Norris to Clinton daily for $150 a year, which is less than 50 cents a day. Mr. & Mrs. Darr knew both happiness and hardship, and she was a woman of exceptional graces endowed with a cheerful spirit that radiated happiness to all. Her life was one of helpfulness and doing the task that was nearest, not as a duty but as an opportunity. She was devoted to her husband and children, but found time to participate in the activities of the Presbyterian church, of which she was a member, and for ten years taught a class of ladies, whom she always referred to as "her girls." These girls acted as flower bearers at her funeral. It was good that she could return to die in the community that she loved, because during her last days on earth friends and neighbors daily visited her, giving her bits of news and happiness and the love that she so deserved. She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Paul Darr, Tyler, Texas, and three daughters, Mrs. Edna Carpenter, Texas, Mrs. Nellie Goodwin, Kansas City, Mrs. Frank Vance, Norris. She also leaves the following brothers, W. B. Waugh, Texas, J. H. and E. R. Waugh, Norris, R. L. Waugh, Clarksville, Ia, the latter came for the funeral and two sisters, Mrs. L. L. Smith, Urich and Mrs. James Adair, Chilhowee. The funeral was conducted in the Presbyterian church in Blairstown by Rev. Humphrey and the burial was in Carpenter Cemetery. (Note: Mattie's mother the former Mary Henderson, died in Indiana before her father and his second wife, Julia Ann Hamilton came to Missouri.) ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
