DeLaVERGNE OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== DeLaVERGNE, Frances Mary PRESTON 1827 - 1886 Clinton MO, Apr 1886 - Mrs. F. M. DeLaVergne died at Eureka Springs, Ark., quarter to 5 o'clock a.m., April 5th, 1886, of bronchial pneumonia. She left her home in this city a few days previous to her death, accompanied by her daughter, Miss Fannie, hoping to benefit the health of both, but a severe cold contracted while traveling caused her death, doing the work so rapidly other members of the family were unable to reach her. Miss Fannie, for a short time, had to be alone with strangers, in her great trouble. Her husband did not reach the Springs until 11 a.m. the day she died. He went in response to a telegram stating she was sick, but not dangerously so. The most faithful teacher and friend, at the head of every good work, whether spiritual or intellectual. She met with the Chatauqua Society one week before her death, when it was named the "Mary DeLaVergne Society" in her honor. She will truly be "forever remembered by what she had done." She was laid to rest in Oak Grove Cemetery, after funeral services at the First Presbyterian Church. Maiden name was Frances Mary Preston. Born at Marietta, Ohio, February 1, 1827. She was a daughter of John and Sarah Preston. She graduated with valedictory honors at the Marietta Female Seminary. Married to James A. DeLaVergne of Dutchess County, N.Y. at Marietta, Ohio, December 14, 1853. From time of her graduation, she devoted her life to the profession of teaching. Taught in schools of Ohio, Indiana, Louisiana, Tennessee and Missouri. Taught 17 years in Clinton public schools, commencing in 1866, having moved to Clinton from Aurora, Indiana in the fall of 1865. Was one of the original members of the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton, organized in 1866. She was president of the Ladies' Missionary Society of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Clinton, and one of the original members of the church, organized here in 1866. She was also president of the "Mary DeLaVergne Chatauqua Literary Circle" of this city. Taught in Presbyterian Sunday School many years and over 12 years in Methodist Sunday School of Clinton. Had two sisters. One died at an early age. Other sister, Mrs. Sarah P. Faris, of this city. Five brothers. One a Methodist minister, who died in Maryland in 1865. One died when an infant. Three others married and died in the south. Children: Sallie (now Mrs. E. O. Price), city; Charley, (died in infancy at Aurora, Ind.); Jas. A., Jr., telegraph operator (married Miss Alice Buchanan of Greenville, Ill.); Fannie P., city; Catherine D., city; Max Freeman, died at the age of two years in 1869; an adopted daughter now married and living near Buena Vista, Colorado. Mrs. DeLaVergne was a niece of the distinguished divine, Rev. Wm. S. Plummer, D.D. and a near relative of Wm. P. Buell, missionary to Siam in 1839. DeLaVERGNE, Mary Yates n/a - 1887 Clinton MO, 1887 - Died, December 9, in Colorado Springs, Mrs. Mary Yates DeLaVergne, wife of Geo. W. DeLaVergne, aged 90. Born at New Hackensack, Duchess County, N.Y. With her husband, came west to Marietta, Ohio. They lived several years in Cumberland, Middle Tenn., and after the war came to Clinton, where their son, Col. Geo. DeLaVergne had preceded them. About seven years ago the two families changed their residence to Colorado Springs and became permanently establised in the suburbs of that beautiful city. Wm.
