JONES, George W. 1848 - 1927 Clinton Eye, Clinton, MO, Feb 1927 - Again the dark angel of death has come into our home and taken our dear father, George. W. Jones, home to heaven. Just 15 months and 13 days since we gave our darling son, Floyd W. George, to God and who suffered so long, and at that time, Grandpa said why couldn't it be me in place of son, and now he has gone to him. Another good father has taken his departure, and while absent from us, he is not forgotten. His influence remains to cheer and encourage those who were near and dear to him, while on earth. Alas, 'twas hard to give him up, but God's will, not ours be done. But we mourn not as those who have no hope, for he accepted Christ as his Savior when a young man and united with the Tebo Baptist church Sixty Years ago and lived a devoted Christian life to his death, always singing God's praises and praying. All through his long sickness, which has been since Thanksgiving, he sand and prayed all the time, his favorite song, "The Unclouded Day." One day when he was so sick he said to his daughter, "I know what is the matter, I have quit singing," but he was so weak he could hardly sing, but sang, by and by I'll go and meet her on that other bright shore. Won't that be a happy meeting on that other bright shore. George W. Jones was born May 23, 1848, near Leesville; died February 5, 1927, making him 78 years, 8 months and 13 days old. On September 7, 1872, he was united in marriage to Susan Caroline Parker. To this union one child was born. Mrs. T. R. Gill, who lives at Lewis Station. His wife preceded him to the Better World nearly 17 years ago and "Uncle George," as everyone called him, has made his home with his daughter, since. Uncle George took down sick the second day of December, 1926, with rheumatism, and from that seemed like everything went wrong with him. He had three good doctors called a couple days following: had a good trained nurse, but all said nothing can be done, but he was ready to go when God called him. Besides the dear daughter who was so good to him and who fell at her post of duty on Monday night before he died, and was not able to be up any more. He leaves a near granddaughter and son-in-law, who were the pride of his heart; two brothers, W. H. Jones, at Lewis, and J. M. Jones, Afton, Okla., also a host of relatives and friends to mourn his going. His brother, from Afton, came to see him and as he seemed to get better he returned home. His brother and wife, here, did everything they could but we could not keep him. God needed him and had a place for him. His chief occupation was gardening and fishing. He did love to fish and had caught fish every month in the year for two years, and his garden was always a beauty, never letting any weeds grow in it and had planned this year to raise some vegetables for the Calhoun Colt Show and talked so much about it while he was sick. Everybody liked Uncle George - the young as well as the older ones, and he will be missed in the home, at the store and every place. On Sunday, at 10:30 a.m., Bro. Faris, pastor of Mt. Gilead Baptist church, preached the funeral at the home of his daughter to a large crowd. They left at 11 o'clock for Tebo Baptist church, the funeral to be at 2 o'clock, but the roads were so bad they did not get there until 4 o'clock, and Bro. Billie Briggs, a life time friend, preached the funeral there to a large crowd of relatives and friends and then the body was lain in the cemetery near by, under the most beautiful flowers to await the resurrection day. The large crowd of sorrowing friends attending last rites and the wealth of the floral offerings bore mute testimony to the love and esteem held for this fine Christian man by the entire county. Robert Lee Jones, twin son of Reuben A. and Fannie (Parks) Jones was born one and one-half miles west of Calhoun, June 26, 1885, and departed this life Wednesday, November 22, 1967, at 8:00 p.m. at the Wetzel Hospital in Clinton at the age of 82 years and five months. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Louis Dale; his parents, three brothers, one sister and two grandchildren. Early in life he professed his faith in Christ and united with the Calhoun Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for 47 years. He was most grateful that he was physically able to attend the church's 110th anniversary last August 27th, and on that occasion, he and his son, Floyd, were honored for having served for 16 years as the only father-son deacon team in the history of the church. Mr. Jones was always a wonderful counselor and close friend to the many dedicated pastors who served the church. He had a special interest and understanding for young people, and was deeply concerned about his two grandsons in service, Darrell Don Ward, stationed in Vietnam and Brad Cooper, stationed in Germany. On February 17, 1909, he was united in marriage to Maude Ethel Dannatt of Calhoun. They made their first home for 10 years one mile west of Calhoun on the farm now owned by their youngest son, Col. Melvin (Billy). They moved later to a farm 2 1/2 miles south of Calhoun, known as Catalpa Grove Stock Farm, where they resided 48 years. This home, with his faithful Christian companion by his side, was his castle, for it was here that he was able to exercise his love for the soil, his cattle and his riding horses, and to extend the hospitality of his home to friends, relatives and strangers. It was also here that he and Mrs. Jones celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on February 17, 1959. On April 4, 1967, they moved to their present home at 523 East Jefferson, Clinton. Mr. Jones was an ardent Democrat and always proud that he was named for the famous General Robert E. Lee. He and his sons were known throughout the South and Middle West where for years they sold and exhibited mules. In later years, they judged some of the nation's leading mule shows. For many years, he was Superintendent of the Mule Department of the Calhoun Colt Show and was in attendance each year, except for two when hospitalized. His "going home" on Thanksgiving Eve was in a measure, timely, since many times he had expressed joy and thankfulness for having his seven children and their families present for various reunions and good times enriched with good music and wholesome fun. He is survived by his devoted wife, Maude, of the home, who lovingly cared for him through his illness, and who, with a daughter, Ethlyn, were at his bedside when he passed away; sons, Floyd and Col. Melvin (Billy) of Calhoun and Veryl Lee of Clinton; daughters, Ethlyn of St. Louis, Mrs. R. E. (Ada) Searcy of Topeka, Kansas, Mrs. D. P. (Elsie) Cooper of Windsor and Mrs. Don (Nadene) Ward of Blairstown; 13 grandchildren, and two great granddaughters, one sister, Mrs. Thomas (Jennie) Clark, Clinton; brothers, Charley of Clinton, and Eugene and Rolla of Calhoun; other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Jones, who loved life and lived it to the fullest, seldom met a stranger. Through his long illness he remained mentally alert and interested in world events and the varied activities of his devoted family. His sparkling wit, keen sense of humor and deep humility will be sadly missed by his wide circle of friends and loved ones.
