Mr. Middlecoff's father was reared east of Clinton and was a brother of the late Mrs. J. C. Inloes. Elmer Middlecoff, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Middlecoff, pioneer Highet creek placer operators, was killed September 14, 1936, when a huge mass of hard, blue clay caved in while Elmer, Jr., was tending the hydraulic monitor. As Elmer fell to the ground unconscious, the three men who were working in the cut at the time - C. R. Dickie, Tom Gregory and Walter Bleasdale - rushed to his aid. They immediately packed him to the mess house close by and made him as comfortable as possible on a cot. Elmer died an hour and fifteen minutes from the time that he had been struck, never regaining consciousness. By team his father brought the remains to Minto Bridge from where it was brought to Mayo by Bud Fisher in his truck. The tow remaining members of the crew ac- (obit cut) his sad mission down the Highet creek trail. Every seat in St. Mary's church was filled Thursday afternoon as the funeral service for the late, young Mayo pioneer was conducted by Rev. Wm. Valentine.
