PORTIS OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== PORTIS, R. A. n/a - 1887 Clinton MO, Mar 19 1887 - R. A. Portis died Sunday night at 10 after an illness of only a few days, of typhoid pneumonia. He came to the county about 12 years ago and was a native of North Carolina. His wife died two years ago, followed in a few months by an infant son, leaving him with five little girls and one boy, the youngest 8 years old. He was an earnest Christian and was always cheerful, working hard to keep his family together. Only a few days before his death, he was telling a friend his plans for improving his garden and making the most of his few acres of ground to supply the early market. His little home is in the suburbs of the southeast part of town, where he could always be found busy when not on a necessary errand or marketing his vegetables and fruit. Mr. Portis was over fifty years of age. He had a dependent family and one daughter sadly afflicted from birth. It seems the trial of life must have been particularly great for him but, with him to labor was to pray. Buried by his wife in Oak Grove. (Later News Article: S. Jones, who was appointed guardian for the Portes children, has found homes for four, as follows: Rachel E. will live with Mrs. Henderson, the milliner; Annie L. with Henry Lane; Myrtle M. with Mr. Richards, the engineer of the pottery works, and Charley R., with a Mr. DeWitt. A home has not been found for the cripple.) ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
