POWERS OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== POWERS, Alva Marion 1897 - 1954 Alva Marion Powers was born 4 December 1897 and entered into rest 7 October 1954. He was united in marriage to Leona May Hopkins on 3 Feb 1927 and to this union five children were born. Services were conducted by Vansant's and were held at Garland Baptist Church on 10 October 1954, at 2 p.m. Officiating was Rev. William F. Smith. The church choir sang In The Sweet Bye and Bye, Going Down The Valley and When They Ring Those Golden Bells accompanied by Mrs. George McQuitty. Soloist was Miss Joyce Rissel. Pallbearers were Lawrence Norcross, Edgar Rissel, Earl Wheeler, Carl Howard, Eugene Straw and William E. Morgan. Burial was in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton. POWERS, Charles William "Chuck" 1909 - 1997 Charles William (Chuck) Powers, 88, son of Clark and Levina (Foster) Powers, was born July 11, 1909, at home on the C. E. Powers homestead located on the east side of Shawnee Mound. Charles departed from life December 1, 1997. Charles spent his entire life in the Shawnee Mound and Clinton communities. He graduated from Shawnee Mound High School in 1927. On Feb 16, 1938, Charles was united in marriage to Lorena Parker and to this union two sons were born, Charles Dale, who preceded him in death in 1988 and Gary Lynn. Charles lifetime career was farming and raising livestock and he was especially fond of tending his well-cared for cattle and hogs. Charles was assessor for his township for approximately 24 years. Funeral services for both Mr. and Mrs. Powers were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, at Consalus Chapel, Clinton. Pallbearers were Leroy Hetherington, Dale Church, Temple Tillman, John Newell, David Wilson and Paul Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Delano Johnson, Bob Ayers and Robert Walden. Burials were in Englewood Cemetery, under the direction of Consalus Funeral Home, Clinton. POWERS, Leona May HOPKINS 1907 - 1995 Leona May Hopkins, daughter of Artiemus Acy and Effie Young Hopkins, was born Nov 9, 1907, near Calhoun, the third eldest of six children. The family later moved to the Norris community where she graduated from high school. On Feb 3, 1927, Leona was united in marriage to Alva Marion Powers and to this union five children were born. They lived on the family farm south of Norris and were active members of the Garland Baptist Church. Alva died in October of 1954 and Leona remained on the farm until the youngest daughter completed high school. In 1957, she moved to Kansas City to find work and was able to do what she loved -- sewing. Until her retirement she worked for the Peterson Cap and Gown Company and Wilson Sporting goods, taking much pleasure outfitting her grandchildren in miniature warm-up jackets exactly like the Globe-Trotters or other big name game players. While living in Kansas City, Leona was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church. She worked in the nurseries of the church, caring for the little babies most of the time. In 1971, Leona moved to Clinton to be near her family and has lived at her Wetzel Circle address for over 22 years. She always made sure her hands were busy, whether it was sewing for others or herself, crocheting or piecing quilts, most of which she gave to family members. Although her strength was failing, in January she started cutting and piecing another quilt. Leona entered Golden Valley Memorial Hospital on January 22, 1995, and found eternal rest on Saturday evening, March 4. Leona was a member of the First Baptist Church, Clinton, where she attended as long as her health permitted. She is survived by the children, Anna May (Mrs. Brack) Crooks, Marian Ruth (Mrs. Melvin) Childers, Betty Jane (Mrs. Henry) Bigler and Doris Lee (Mrs. Elmer) Fields, all of Clinton, and Earl Gene Powers of Creighton; as well as 18 grandchildren, Lola Lewis, Boyd and Gary Childers, Jim, Tom and Susan Crooks, Jerry Powers, Karen Huey, Dennis Fields, Jane Ballou, Melody Paddock, Julie, Bruce, Brian, Shawn, Tristan, Travis and Lindley Bigler and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Mary Lett, and one sister-in-law, Wilma Hopkins, both of Odessa, and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, Tuesday, March 7, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ronald Chastine officiating. Pallbearers were Jerry Powers, Dennis Fields, Boyd and Gary Childers, Bruce, Brian, Shawn, Tristan, Travis and Lindley Bigler, Jim and Tom Crooks. Burial was in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton. POWERS, Lorena Fern PARKER 1912 - 1997 Lorena Fern Parker Powers, the third daughter of Abraham Lincoln Parker and Annie Sarah Rohning Parker, was born June 24, 1912, at the home five and one- half miles east of Clinton in the Alberta neighborhood. She returned to the Lord on November 30, 1997, at the age of 85 years. At the age of 18, she and her family moved into the Highland School neighborhood, four miles west of Calhoun. After finishing school, she was employed at a Clinton hatchery which was the popular place of employment at that time. She and Charles made their first home northeast of Shawnee Mound for several years, then moved to their own farm west of Quarles. They spent 38 years there making good and busy lives. Lorena was tax collector for Shawnee Township for 10 years. She and her family were dedicated members of the Quarles Baptist Church, having joined there in 1953. She was in the Sunday School and church chorister for over 20 years. Also, taught Sunday school classes there and at the Highland Sunday School for 52 years. Her husband, Charles, survives.
