SARLES OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== SARLES, Isaac n/a - 1892 (Clipping headed "LEWIS") - On Thursday the 7th inst. at about 12 o'clock a.m. a very sad accident happened at the mines of the Tebo Coal Co., situated one and a half miles north of our station. Isaac Sarles, a coal miner, while on duty separating the clay from the coal, failed to notice the dangerous condition of some slate and coal above his head and even did not heed the warning shout of another miner, before it was too late. With a loud noise the mass of slate and coal came crashing down, breaking his leg in two places and injuring him internally, death ensuing twenty-three hours afterwards. This adds another chapter to a miner's life. Sarles was fifty-three years old at the time of his death. He leaves a wife and six children, five boys and a little girl. He served three years and six months in the Union army; his pension papers were forwarded sometime ago and his widow will receive all pension due him up to the time of his death ere long. His burial took place on Sunday the 10th, at 4 o'clock p.m., Rev. Johnson officiating. The funeral sermon will be preached at the M.E. Church at Lewis next Sunday. Although the weather was inclement, all the miners, with a few exceptions, paid their last tribute to their late comrade, following the remains on foot over the rough country road to their last resting place. Rough may be the garments of a miner, and rough may be his speech and manner, but under that rough garment there beats a heart ever ready to help the distressed and the sick. - CARD OF THANKS - Mrs. Isaac Sarles of Lewis takes this opportunity to thank the citizens of Lewis and vicinity for their many kind offices during her great affliction. (Note: The accident happened on January 8, 1892. Isaac served in Company "C" of the 49th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. His military marker is located in Barton City Cemetery, Barton County, MO (near Liberal), but his body is buried near Lewis Station. The family story says both Isaac and his 18 year old son, Lafe, were killed in the same mine accident. - Mary Ann (Searles) Hoppe, Rogers, Arkansas mahoppe@specent.com) ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
