Scott Over - It was on Saturday night near the time of Sunset, at 6:20 p.m., April 28, 1928, that the life work of Mrs. N. E. Scott was ended at her home on Rogers Avenue. August 31, 1927 she was first stricken with a cerebral hemorrage. Then it was thought perhaps she would not live, but she got better and went home with her daughter, Mrs. Mont Bornard, to Salem, Mo., where she got much better under the tender care, but she was not satisfied to be away from her afflicted husband or her aged mother, so returned in three weeks. In February this year she was again stricken and got better, but the fatal illness came just about a week previous to her death. She was concious until Thursday and knew her children and granddaughter, when they arrived. Mary Jane Stanton was born June 4, 1859, at Smith Bend, what was then Benton county, but what is now St. Clair. There she grew up learning the virtues of womanhood from one of the best women in the world, her mother, Mrs. James Stanton. She learned how to be a real neighbor; being good and kind were more important than the eternal rush for wealth. The result of this training every life was made better with whom she came in contact. She was united in marriage with N. E. Scott February 14, 1877, at the family home near Leesville, by the late Rev. Thos. Briggs. They lived near Shawnee Mound, then came to Clinton, which has been her home for near 40 years. Mr. Scott was employed at the White Swan Mill for many years. To comfort and care for the bereaved husband are the following children - James W. Scott, Phillipine Islands; Milo B. and John Scott, Lawton, Okla.; Mrs. Mont Bernard, Salem. There are nine grandchildren. One, Wyota Lee, the eldest daughter of Milo Scott, was raised by Mrs. Scott, as she was a very frail child and her parents being in business were unable to give her the proper care. All the grandchildren would rather come to her home than any place else in the world. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. James Stanton, who is 88 years old and who has lived with Mrs. Scott a number of years, and the following brothers and sisters - John Stanton, Goodland, Kas.; Alec Stanton, Benkelman, Neb.; Mrs. John Smith, Smith Bend; Mrs. E. Wallen, Eldorado Springs, Mo. She was converted at the age of 19 and united with the presbyterian church at Leesville. She also belonged to the Women's Circle of G.A.R. She always gave herself to others. She cheered those she knew along life's pathway. The funeral services were conducted at the Christian church by Rev. Lindsey at 4 p.m. Sunday. Burial was in Englewood beside her son, Howard, who died in service for his country a number of years ago. The Ladies of the G.A.R. conducted the graveside service. The pall bearers were: Otto Gerhardt, Guy Williams, Martin Bennett, Gene Brandenburg, Ted Wilson and Edwin Bennett. SCOTT, Uel Ray 1892 - 1958 Uel Ray Scott, 65, died January 30, 1958, two miles east of Quarles. He was the only child of James Madison and Maude Bonta Scott.
