SEAL OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== SEAL, Dwight 1893 - 1939 Unknown Newspaper Clipping, Mar 23 1939 - Tragic Accident takes life of Dwight Seal at Farm Home Tuesday When Scaffold holding lunber gives way - Struck by falling board-neck broken - The entire community was shocked and saddened Tuesday afternoon when word was telephoned into Windsor of the tragic death of Dwight Seal at the Seal farm about 3 1/2 miles north of Windsor on the Knob Noster road. Dwight Seal with his father, Frank Seal, of Windsor had been storing some used lumber in the barn expecting to use it to build a larger chicken house later on. A scaffold had been built of heavy two by sixes on one side of the driveway in the barn and the lumber neatly stacked at each end of this scaffold to take the weight away from the center as much as possible. Dwight Seal and his father and the former's three year old daughter, Lois, had been in the barn working and had discussed the strength of the scaffold and braces. This was about 1:30 o'clock. Mr. Seal and little granddaughter had just gone outside the barn when the scaffold gave way at one end, pinning Dwight under it. Mr. Seal heard him call "Dad, Oh! Dad!" several times, and rushed back into the barn but could not rescue him so called for Mrs. Seal and they gave the alarm and neighbors and passersby responded very quickly and assisted in getting young Seal out, but life was thought to be extinct before he was removed to the yard. In the meantime two doctors who had been summoned from Windsor arrived and pronounced him dead. Upon examination it was found that his neck had been broken, but there were no other injuries on his body. Dwight Seal was a telegraph operator with the Rock Island Railroad and had twenty years seniority but had not had steady work the past five years owing to economic conditions that caused many men to be laid of temporarily. During this time he and his family came from their home at Greenwood, Missouri, to the parental home. Later Mr. Seal improved his farm with his son's assistance and the younger Seal and his family moved to the farm. There was a very close tie between Mr. and Mrs. Frank Seal and their son and his family and very few days passed that the families were not together at some time during the day at one home or the other. Dwight Seal, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Seal, was born July 13, 1893 at Falls City, Nebraska, and died as stated above Tuesday, March 21, 1939. He learned to be a telegraph operator in his early youth under his father, who has been employed at the Rock Island station in Windsor for many years. Young Seal was operator at Greenwood, Missouri a number of years and while there married Mary Ellen Copeland of Greenwood. To this union two children were born, Gloria, 6 and Lois 3 years of age. He served in the World War and was a member of the Windsor Post of the American Legion. He was an industrious but quiet man, devoted to his family and parents. He is survived by his two small daughters and his grief stricken wife and parents. The funeral service was held this afternoon (Thursday) at two o'clock at the funeral home, conducted by the Rev. E. L. Dillon, assisted by the Rev. G. R. Timbrook. Mrs. Kenneth Miller and Mrs. W. B. Chipman sang, accompanied by Mrs. Roy Milam on the piano. Pallbearers, all World War Veterans, were : Frank Coit, Virgil Twyman, P. J. Kirby, Herbert Cannon, Urvin Whitton, and Warren Beck. Burial was in Laurel Oak Cemetary, Windsor. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
