STRATE OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== STRATE, Dorothy Lucinda MARTIN 1909 - 1997 Dorothy Lucinda Martin Strate, 88, Holden, died Sunday, November 16, 1997, at Lee's Summit Hospital, Lee's Summit. She was born on August 27, 1909, in St. Louis, daughter of William Henry Martin and Dora Ellen Moreland Martin. She had lived in the Holden community since 1951. Mrs. Strate graduated from Calhoun High School in 1927. She received her BS degree and her MS in education degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg and the University of Missouri at Columbia. She began her teaching career at Moore School near her hometown of Calhoun. She then taught at Land School and George School near Clinton. From there she moved to Doak School near Holden. There she met and married her husband, Warren A. Strate on May 7, 1938, in Nevada, and they moved to Independence, where their three sons were born. In 1951 she and her family moved to a farm near Holden, and after her sons were in school she resumed her teaching career at LaTour School in LaTour. After teaching four years in Johnson County, she accepted a position with the Odessa School District where she taught until she retired in 1975. Mrs. Strate was a lifetime teacher, wife and mother. She was recognized many times for her teaching accomplishments. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Holden, United Methodist Women, Missouri State Teachers Association, Holden Garden Club, Shakespeare Club of Holden and the International Reading Association. She is survived by her husband of the home; three sons, Warren Edward and his wife, Jackie, Krum, Texas, James William and his wife, Sharon, Enid, Oklahoma, and Larry David and his wife, Vicki Holden; a brother, Harold Martin, Independence; six grandchildren, Kimberly Coake, Friscoe, Texas, Karen McIntosh, Norman, Oklahoma; Christie Strate, Enid, Oklahoma, Jim Strate, Jr., Waukomis, Oklahoma, and Kelli Strate and Tricia Strate, Holden, and three great-grandchildren, Brandon Coake, Justin Strate, and Jarred Strate. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Martin and Earl Martin. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 19, at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden with Rev. Steve Shearer officiating. Catherine Roberts accompanied Virginia Thurman as she sang Abide With Me and Amazing Grace. Burial was in Holden Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dale Strate, Gary Strate, Gene Strate, Darrell Martin, Donald Martin, Mike Martin and Danny Martin.
