WILLIAMS GRANT GATEWOOD ATKINSON 1816 - 1887 Clinton MO, Jun 4 1887 - Mrs. Marah L. Thornton died at her home in Clinton Thursday at 12:30, having been confined to her bed the greater portion of the spring from rheumatism, often suffering intensely. Mrs. Thornton was among the most influential and highly-respected women in our community. She devoted a large portion of her time superintending the education and attending to the proper settlement in life of her grandsons, Sam and James Atkinson, who were reared in our midst but now are respected and rising businessmen at Nevada. These young men and their sister, Fannie, are the heirs of their grandmother's property as well as noble qualities. she had lived the three score and ten, reaching her 71st brithday in April; born in 1816 in Montgomery county, Ky., joined the Christian Church at 12 years of age; married the first time at 16 to John Grant, but his death left her a widow in a few years and after two years, she married Chas. Gatewood, who lived less than a year. Several years passed and she married S. W. Atkinson, whose death left her a widow before the war. She remained in Kentucky until 1868, until she became the wife of Dr. W. T. Thornton and came to Clinton. Dr. Thornton preceded her to the better land in 1874.
