TILLMAN OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== TILLMAN, Cleda Maude CRAWFORD 1882 - 1982 Almost a century ago, December 16, 1882, Cleda Crawford Tillman (Mrs. Carl Tillman) was born to William Harrison and Olive Chilcote Crawford at the farm home near Clinton. The Crawford house stood almost as a sentinel on this high point. Mrs. Tillman often shared with her own children the joy of looking over Henry County as far as the eye could see and especially the thrill of seeing the lights of Clinton, as well as the sound of the White Swan Mill's whistle, later known as the Larabee Mill. Cleda Crawford Tillman attended Curtis School.. In 1904, Cleda Crawford married Carl Tillman of the Quarles neighborhood. Carl Tillman was the son of Nelson Harless and Harriet Ann Leaton Tillman. Nelson Tillman and his two brothers, Anderson and William Tillman, returned from the Civil War to the farm north of Clinton, where Carl and Cleda spent the first year of their married life. This farm home has continued in the family since Civil War days and since 1945 has been the home of Harless and Elizabeth Tillman, first child of Cleda and Carl Tillman. In 1905, the Carl Tillman's purchased the Bridges farm just across the highway from the Nelson Tillman farm, and it became the center of their family activities for 43 years. In 1924, Mr. and Mrs. Tillman became members of the Quarles Baptist Church. Cleda taught Sunday School classes for many years. After her husband's death in 1948, she remained on the farm until 1949, when she moved to Clinton. Mrs. Tillman continued in her Clinton home until 1976. The next two years she spent in Kansas City with her daughter. In 1978, Mrs. Tillman's health deteriorated to the degree she required skilled, continuous care and then moved to Beautiful Savior Nursing Home in Belton. Cleda Maude Tillman, 99, is survived by three children, Harless, Carl and Ruth. Funeral services were September 28 at Quarles Baptist Church. Burial was in Englewood Cemetery. TILLMAN, Harless Crawford 1905 - 1992 Harless Crawford Tillman, son of Carl Stanley and Cleda Crawford Tillman, was born May 4, 1905, at Quarles, north of Clinton, in the farm home that was purchased by his grandfather, Nelson Harless Tillman, soon after the Civil War. When he was a year old, he moved to the home just a short distance north of the grandfather's farm where he spent his childhood and young manhood until he married Elizabeth Albin Tillman, in February 1928. Then Harless was back to his birth-place to spend all his years in the pursuit of farming, third generation farmer who truly embraced the family motto, inscribed on the coat of arms, Hope sustains the farmer. Harless and Elizabeth were blessed with a son, Temple Harless, who resides in Creve Coeur, Missouri. Marjorie and Temple have a son, Donald; a daughter Shana, who were the pride and joy of their grandparents. He became a member of the Quarles Baptist Church in 1918 where he was faithful, loyal and devoted. He taught Sunday school classes, served as Sunday school superintendent, always challenging the cause of the rural church. He was a member of the first class of Shawnee Mound High School where he delighted in the annual alumni meetings and attended the one in September 1992. After Elizabeth's death in June of 1988, he continued to live on the farm until his health declined to the point he needed some special help the past few months. Since that time, he has been at Clinton Residential Center where he was at the time of his death (December 10 1992). The family is most appreciative of the kind and loving care he received while a resident at this professional new center in Clinton. It is impossible to record the many contributions and influence of a long Christian life exemplified in an upright man. He loved his home, church and community and would want his family to say thank you for your love, support and every kindness during his journey through the years. He is survived by the son, Temple, and his wife, Marjorie, of Creve Coeur; the granddaughter, Shana, who now resides in Overland Park, Kansas; the grandson, Donald, Chicago, Illinois, where he is completing his work for a fellowship in pharmacy; his brother Carl Tillman, of Clinton; his sister, Ruth Tillman of Clinton; nieces and nephews, as well as many cousins, and a host of friends. Family night was attended by many relatives and friends at Consalus Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, December 13, 1992. Funeral services were conducted at Quarles Baptist Church Monday, December 14, 1992. The pastor, Reverend George McConnell, paid loving tribute to one of the long-time members of the church. TILLMAN, Nannie Elizabeth ALBIN 1906 - 1988 Nannie Elizabeth Albin Tillman, daughter of Frank Marion and Nannie Albin was born May 2, 1906, in Chilhowee. She was the youngest of nine children, four brothers and sisters died in infancy and early childhood. One sister, Iva McReynolds, and a brother, Marion Albin, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Fora Preston and a brother, Hugh Albin, both of whom reside in Chilhowee. She passed away at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Clinton, June 12, 1988. She attended school in Chilhowee. Upon graduation from high school she pursued a business course at Holy Rosary Academy, Clinton, to prepare to become a secretary. While in this school she made her home with Miss Ida Kimes, a retired teacher who had been her future husband's first teacher at Comer School. Upon completion of her business course, she was employed as secretary to Senator James Russell, Missouri General Assembly, Jefferson City, during his terms of office. While attending school in Chilhowee and studying piano, she was an active member of the Chilhowee Community Church. On February 16, 1928 she became the wife of Harless Crawford Tillman of the Quarles community, seven miles north of Clinton on Highway 13. This couple became the third generation to establish their home on the farm purchased by Harless’ grandfather, Nelson Harless Tillman, soon after his release from Libby Prison at the close of the Civil War. Throughout these sixty years they have remained on this farm near Clinton. On December 6, 1931, she became a member of the Quarles Baptist Church. She served many years as pianist and was always willing to share her lovely alto voice in the church choir, as well as the popular quartet which provided the music for many special programs and especially memorial services held in the churches of the area. Funeral services were held June 15 at the church. TILLMAN, Ruth Olive 1908 - 1999 Ruth Olive Tillman, 91, Clinton, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at Clinton Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Clinton.
