In high school he loved to play baseball and basketball. He entered the United States Army in February 1943 and served for three years in the 87th "Acorn" Infantry Division which crossed France, Belgium and Germany. He was a parts manager for about 12 years at Bob Stayton Chevrolet in Clinton. In 1968 he purchased the Phillips 66 jobbership in Clinton and continued in the business until his ill health forced him to retire in January of this year. In 1971 he purchased the propane business and in 1974 he purchased Fitzgerald's Propane. He also owned a trailer park in town and had also purchased a propane business in Warsaw. His nickname "Slugger:" came from his baseball days. While in the Army his captain saw him practicing pitching at a target he had erected and told him he was better suited to pitching fast pitch softball. He made the switch and became quite a pitcher playing softball for over 35 years. The nickname did not come from his hitting ability or his speed, however he was a very good pitcher.
