Mar 06, 1884 Alexander Mitchell Mr. Alexander Mitchell, an old citizen of this place, died at his home in Fayette, on Sunday evening, after a long and painful illness. Mr. Mitchell was born in Gloucester county Va., April 23, 1807. He was married to Miss Julia C. Brown of Essex county, Va. in 1835. He came to Missouri in 1839 and first located in Boone's county where he resided for two years and then came to Howard, locating in Faytette in 1846, where he continued to live until his death. He was a carriage manufacturer by occupation and followed this business until forced to give it up by declining health. He was elected mayor in 1866 and held the office almost continously until 1880, when his health would not permit him to longer discharge the duties of the office, and his son, Capt. W. F. Mitchell, the present mayor was elected. His wife who has been his devoted and faithful companion through all these years of trials, is still living and in enjoyment of excellent health. Their homes have been brightened with ten children eight of whom are still living. Mr. Mitchell had long been a consistent member of the M.E. Church, South, and when the messenger death knocked found him ready and waiting. His funeral was preached at the family residence on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock by Dr. E.R. Hendrix and Rev. J. H. Ledbetter. After the funeral services his remains was conducted to the city cemetery, followed by a large concourse of citizens and friends who gathered around the tomb to pay the last tribute to the dead.
