Buildings 1805 - Ephraim Stout cabin. Looney Sharp and sons near K P Cemetery and Country Club Grounds. Jim Brown at the Villa Marie site. 1825 - Josiah Berryman (Kickapoo Indian) & Reverend JC, grandfather of Thomas Blanton, bought Stouts Cabin. 1837 - 38 Col. Cyrus Russells family preceded by Augustus Pease and J. Livingston Van Doren .Pease lived in Sharps cabin, Van Doren lived in the block east of Miller Court, in Arcadia. 1839 Post Office built in Arcadia, the only one in the County until the one in Pilot Knob in 1865. 1841-42 Russells built brick houses. By this time Dick Baldwin, Steve Pollock and Jim Pollock had built homes in the area. 1846 - Arcadia High School (site of convent) by Rev. Berryman 1853 - Ironton had its first house - L J Brown. Two stores, (H N Tong and Aubuchon) and (Col Cyrus Russell and Dr. Williams.) 1858 - (1) Courthouse ($14,000 authorized). Geo Evans and Wm. F Mitchell contractors, Judge J V Logan, Supt. of building. (2) Ben Boward's Candy Shop. (3) Vellen's Restaurant (4) A B Guild's furniture store (5) I.O.O.F. Hall built (lower floor used in Presbyterian Church) (6) Dr. Farrar's Drug Store 1859 - Tong & Carson's brick store prices: calico dress - 98 cents coffee - 12 l/2 cents sugar - 6 l/2 cents flour - $5 a barrell Thomas Macklind's Store Baptist Church (in 1868 ME North owned it) Presbyterian's began building - completed in 1867. 1860 - Reconstruct Main Street: East, beginning at Stout's Creek - two-story log house and blacksmith shop - Mr. Newman, recent immigrant from England, Mr. Coll lived next, beside a long ramblins building that was an eyesore to the town. West, opposite Mr Coll, was a store kept at various times by Whitworth, Bryant, and others. Block was open to the courthouse but west on Russell Street, Mr. Patton had a general store. North, of Courthouse Square (Ancels Funeral Home), was the American House, Shultz's saloon, a bakery, a store kept by Mr. Ealer, and a small dwelling house. Across the street the block was half empty, then Mr. Begley, John Casey, shoemaker and two more buildings filled it too. West corner was occupied by the Blue Store, Odd Fellows Hall on upper corner of that block .(The Odd Fellows building is still there,JM) East, across the street, were a few shacks. Going North, (West side), there were two or three small houses, a tin shop owned by C T Fountaine, and a saddle shop owned by Solomon Brill. M. B. Tetweiler had a dwelling on the next block, while on the East side (Kuhn's) was open except for one or two straight up-and-down board houses. Tong and Carson owned the brick building on the next block. The Ironton House was the only building worth mentioning on the west (Garrett's House.) Knob Street had a few of the better residences occupied by Tong, Grigsby, Vail, Emerson, Zwart and Shepard's. Shepherd Street - had residences owned by C R Peck, J F T Edwards, Carson, and John A Miller. Building in Ironton was at a standstill until after the war. Presbyterian Church unfinished, Methodist Church (3 blocks west) held services irregularly. M.E. Church, South, used the seminary for worship. 1866 - jail - $10,000 authorized, Thomas and Flynn architects. Cost $8,972-50. 1866 - 1876 Saw increased building: (1) Whitworth Store first substantial building erected on Main STreet after the war. (2) B. Shepherd had Sash, Blind, and Spoke Factory on Russell STreet; later became a flouring mill and harness factory. (3) Tannery begun on Stout's Creek in Arcaia, by Wm. Russell. (4) 1867 - Arcadia College - so named. (5) Episcopal Church built. 1868 Summary: courthouse 2 churches 4 schools 2 newspapers a land office 6 wholesale-retail stores 1 drug store reading room machine shop flooring mill 2 tin shops 3 wagon factories post office 2 hotels 1 livery stable Masons Oddfellows Good Templers Lyceum Ironton Library Association 1881 - Academy of Music built Ironton Public School built 1885 - North Ironton - flooring mill owned by Jos. Clarkson, James Clark, Wm. Crammer, sold to Baldwin Brothers - spoke and hub factory. South Ironton -wagon factory - Newman family wagon factory -S T Gay, opposite Miss Alice Gays home.
