E 5th Reg’t, Mo. Vol. On this 5th day of April, A.D. 1891, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Martin Wolff aged 67 years, a resident of Pilot Knob, in the County of Iron and state of Mo. whose post office address is Pilot Knob, Mo. and well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declares as follows: I rendered no service in the late war of 1861-1865 other than in Company E, 5th Regiment of Missouri Volunteers, and have not been in either military or naval service since Nov 22nd 1862, was discharged at Benton Barracks in St. Louis, on that date. ================================================================ CLAIMANT’S AFFIDAVIT State of Missouri County of Iron, SS: In the matter of Martin Wolff, Private Co. E 5th Reg’t, Mo. Infty Vols. On this 13th day of April, A.D. 1891, personally appeared before me a judge of Probate & Affairs Clerk in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Martin Wolf, aged 67 years, a resident of Pilot Knob in the County of Iron and State of Missouri whose post office address is Pilot Knob, Iron County, Mo. and well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declares as follows: In August 1890 he incurred rupture on right side, but from what cause he is unable to state. It continues to grow more until September following when he visited Dr. S. E. Strong of Ironton, Mo. who [?]euse for him a truss. He is also almost totally deaf in his right ear. His hearing in left ear is greatly impaired, sometimes in bad weather he is more deaf than in good weather. He is unable to state how he contracted deafness as it came on him gradually and without any cause known to him. In consequence of deafness, rupture and age he is entirely disabled from the performances of manual labor and that said disabilities are permanent and not the result of his own vicious habits. I never served in any other Company or Regiment except three months in the Pilot Knob Home Guard which constitute all the military service of the United States performed by me during the rebellion 1861-1865. I desire to apply for a pension under the Act of June 27 1890 on account of rupture as well as deafness. ================================================================ CLAIMANT’S AFFIDAVIT State of Missouri County of Iron, SS: In the matter of Martin Wolf Inv. Unable to read] clerk in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Martin Wolf aged 69 years, a resident of Pilot Knob in the County of Iron and State of Missouri whose post-office address is Pilot Knob, Missouri, and well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declares, as follows: I am the claimant and cannot state when, where and under what circumstances I incurred the rupture for the reason, for considerable time before I knew what was the matter I suffered with severe pain in my right groin. When I consulted my physician he pronounced it a rupture. It came on me so gradually that I cannot assign any reason for it. I am compelled to wear a truss all the time and am unable to perform any manual labor. Signed Martin Wolf ================================================================ GENERAL AFFIDAVIT State of Missouri County of Iron, SS: In the matter of Martin Wolf Inv. 881.475 On this 23rd day of May, A.D. 1893 personally appeared before me, a Judge of Probate and [? Hard to read] clerk in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Henry Peetz aged 72 years, a resident of Pilot Knob in the County of Iron and State of Missouri whose post-office address is Pilot Knob, Missouri, and August Gockel aged 65 years, a resident of Pilot Knob whose post-office address is Pilot Knob, Missouri well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declares each for himself, in relation to aforesaid case, as follows: (NOTE -- Affiants should state how they gained a knowledge of the facts to which they testify.) We are well and intimately acquainted with Martin Wolf the claimant for the last 32 years, having lived neighbors to him and know that his is afflicted with partial deafness and rupture on right side which together with his age totally disables him from the performances of manual labor. We know that his deafness has been of two years standing and his rupture of more than three years standing. That his disabilities are not the result of his own vicious habits and that said disabilities are permanent. His reputation in the community where he resides for truthfulness is good and unquestioned and we have every reason to and do believe his statement as to the origin of his disabilities and know that it has been continuous for the last three years or more and up to the present time. We know these facts by reason of an intimate acquaintance as above stated and sing [see?] him almost daily. They further declare that they have no interest in said case and are not concerned in its prosecution. Date of reply, May 4th 1898 Martin Wolff (Signature) ================================================================ Additional Act of June 27, 1890 DECLARATION FOR INVALID PENSION Under Act of Congress approved July 1, 1890. This application may be executed before a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, or any Officer authorized to administer oaths. State of Missouri, County of Iron, SS: On this 22 day of November, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety Eight, personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace, J. G. Schacht [name hard to read] within and for the county and State aforesaid Martin Wolff aged 75 years, a resident of Pilot Knob, county of Iron, State of Missouri, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Martin Wolff who was enrolled on the 22th day of October, 1861, in Co. "E" 5" Mo. Vols. At Benton Barracks St. Louis Comp [?] 5th Missouri Infant. [?] in the War of the Rebellion and served at least ninety days, and was Honorably Discharged at Benton Barracks St. Louis on the 22th day of November, 1862. That he is now unable to earn a support by reason of Deafness and old age 75 years. Whole disabled by a Breach (Rupture) The said disabilities are not due to vicious habits, and are to the best of his knowledge and belief permanent. That he has applied for pension under application No. 866.356. That he is now a pensioner under Certificate No. 866 356. That he has not or never been employed in the United States military or naval service otherwise than as stated above. That he has not been in the military or naval service of the United States since the 22 day of November 1862. That he makes this declaration for the purpose of recurring additional pension under the provisions of the Act of June 27, 1890. He hereby appoints L.C. WOOD & CO., PENSION ATTORNEYS, L. C. WOOD BUILDING, 507 E. STREET N. W., WASHINGTON, D. C. his true and lawful attorneys to prosecute his claim, and he hereby agrees to allow said attorneys the lawful fee of Ten Dollars when his pension is allowed. John George Schacht (Signature) Justice of the Peace (Official Character.) ================================================================ GENERAL AFFIDAVIT State of Missouri, County of Iron, SS: In the matter of Martin Wolff ON THIS 24th day of December, A.D. 1898, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Peter Gestenmeyer, aged 71th years, a resident of Pilot Knob in the County of Iron and State of Missouri whose Post-office address is Pilot Knob Iron County Mo. and Friedrich Ficht, aged 66 years, a resident of Pilot Knob in the County of Iron and State of Missouri whose Post-office address is Pilot Knob Iron County Mo. and, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declares each for himself, in relation to aforesaid case as follows: I Friedrick Ficht of Pilot Knob do hereby affirm and say that I know Martin Wolff since 40 years and that I said M. Wolff always has been a very sober man and never has been under any Victius habits, and that I have known him always as to a heldy man bevore he went into U.S. Service and I can not state since who long he is got that Rup-ture but I know that he is now not able to do a days work, because have of time he has to lay in bett not able to do anything. I Peter Gestenmeyer of Pilot Knob Iron County Mo. do hereby state that I know the above named Martin Wolff since 38 years and that he has been always a sober upright man and never under any victius habits that [?] dit know him allways to be a heldy man before he went in U.S. Service, but I know that he is at present not able to do a days work and I know that he is now totably unable for work. I do not know since how long he is got that Rupture. And we further declare that we have no interest in said case and do not concerned in it’s prosecution. State of Missouri County of Iron On this 18th day of March, A.D. one thousand nine hundred and seven personally appeared before me a Notary Public within and for the county and State aforesaid, Maria Wolff, aged 78 years, a resident of Pilot Knob, County of Iron State of Missouri, who, being duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain pension under the provisions of the act of Congress approved June 27, 1890, as amended by the act of May 9, 1900. That she is the widow of Martin Wolff, who was enrolled under the name of Martin Wolff at Benton Barraks on the 27th day of October, 1861 as a Private in Co. E 5th Reg’t Mo Vol. Inf’ty, and honorably discharged Nov. 22d, 1862, having served ninety days or more during the late war of the Rebellion. That the soldier was not in the military or naval service of the United States except as stated above. That she was married under the name of Maria Hapke to said soldier at Ospreken Prussia on the 1st day of December, 1851, by Pastor of Lutheran Church; that there was no legal barrier to the marriage; that she had not been previously married; that the soldier had not been previously married. That the said soldier died March 3d, 1907, at Pilot Knob, Mo. that she was not divorced from him; that she has not remarried since his death; and that she is without other means of support than her daily labor and an actual net income not exceeding two hundred and fifty dollars per year. That she has not heretofore applied for pension. That her post-office address is Pilot Knob Iron Co. E 5th Mo Vol. Inft. On this 18 day of May A.D. 1907 personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths August Gockel aged 79 years, a resident of Pilot Knob in the County of Iron and State of Missouri whose postoffice address is Pilot Knob Mo. and Herman Zude aged 53 years, a resident of Pilot Knob in the County of Iron and State of Missouri whose postoffice address is Pilot Knob Mo. well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That they have been aquainted with Martin Wolff and Maria Wolff ever since 1861. Mr. Zude’s parents coming from the same place in Germany; he being 6 years old when coming to this country. They both declare that neither of the Wolff’s were devorced since they knew them, but that they were looked upon as an examplary couple and were highly commended. The property Martin Wolff left, consist of 4 lots with a house thereon with household furniture all together worth about 500 dollars. Her income is all what she can raise from her garden. She has not disposed of any property since the death of her husbands. Martin Wolff left no will, and there is no one legaly or otherwise bound to provide for Maria Wolff. Being near neigbors they are conversant with every detail about Maria Wolffs [copy partially cut off] know her to be honerable and trustworthy. They further decalre that they have no interest in said case and are not concerned in it’s prosecution.
