This book contains some items from the early newspapers. January 8th, 1869: Ironton Post Office Letter List; Mrs. Sarah A. Inman. January 1870 - Died-Thursday nite the 5th of Pneumonia Mrs. Ruth Russell wife of William Russell in the 34th year of age. Died: Lesterville, Reynolds Co., Dec 15, 1869, James Adkins Slade aged 55 years, one month and 13 days. He was born in Richmond Va. living in Reynolds Co. past 22 years. Member of Missionary Baptist Church. Leaves a wife and large family to morn. Died: James B. Forster at Shepard and Co. Mill Thursday morn., doing carpenter work, his planning bits became dull, went to grindstone to sharpen them ,while putting belt on grindstone, caught his arm. A negro near gave the alarm, but too late arm and legs broken and head crushed, lived abt 15 min after accid. He was 55 yrs old leaves wife and several children. Jan 20, 1870. Born: Mrs. J. D. Gauley of Carter Co a week or 2 since gave birth to 4 boys. They heard a short time after birth of Leonards appointment - They are now in heaven. Feb 17, 1870 Died: At his res. in Centreville on 14 Feb 1870, James Crownover, clerk of the Circuit and County Courts of Reynolds Co., MO. 59 yrs old. Married: Moser-Bishop at res. of brides mother in Ironton, Mon. Feb 23, 1870, by Rev. T D Davis, Mr. J. Lewis Moser to Miss Belle Bishop (Mar 3, 1870) Born: Mrs. McDaniel lives near Bennetsville, SC gave birth to 5 children (Mar 3, 1870) Died: Richard Brannen a conductor in the employ of the Iron Mt. RR __Company was accid. killed on Sat. He was on a locomotive and obtruded his head so far from the side of the engine in an attempt to look towards the rear part of the train that he was struck on the head by the ore-dump which they were passing. His head was smashed in so that he expired shortly there after. Brannen was a single man.(Mar 17, 1870) (Mar 31, 1870) Dr. Caraway was shot & killed by Moses Proffer at Springhill, Stoddard Co. on the 10th. No arrests were made. Died April 7, 1870 Last Sat. morn. Mr. N. Dilg longtime res. of Iron Co. Killed by tree fell on him Chopping wood for P. K. Iron Co. in Claybaugh's Coaling. Skull crushed, legs broken, body pinned to ground. Sunday body buried in Mason & Oddfellows Cem. Died: Mar 1st 1870 James Stout ,Butler Co., murdered by Father & Son?: Benjamin & Elijah Arnold, they were brought from Butler Co., Mo to Iron Jail. The trial 3rd Mon. in May at Poplar Bluff, MO. Died: Murdered: Chas Daho indicted for murder of his 3 yr old orphan. Took child to raise about 6 weeks ago. 4 weeks later announced child had died and asked neighbors to help bury it. They did and were suspicious about how body was prepared for burial. A Coroners jury was summoned and body raised and they found skull broken and body bruised. Daho was a soldier in 6th Iowa Reg't Infantry and hails from there "Iowa". Died: Near Middlebrook, Iron Co., Mo. Wed. April 13th, 1870, Mrs. Jane R. Thomas in her 74th year. Married: St. Louis, MO, Rev. Dr. Ritterman weds July 1869 Miss Jennie Horwitz of St. Louis to Mr. Siegmund Horwitz of Ironton, MO. Died: 2nd ,Ironton, Mo. Carter infant son of Peter Ake, of Van Buren, MO; 9 mo.14 days. July 1869. Died: Wed. evening Aug 4, 1869 at 10 1/2 clock of pleuropneumonia. Bertie infant daughter of Richard F and Carrie L. Trow, 4 mos. 14 days. Died: Pilot Knob, Mo. Aug 7th, Lillie youngest daughter of P H and Hattie Peters 6 mos 3 days. Married: Sunday 22, 1869, at residence of brides father, P. McFadden by Squire Daniels, Dr. Charles W. Miller to Miss Mollie E. McFadden all of Greenwood Valley, MO. Died: At the Farmers House, Pilot Knob, MO, morn. of 24th of Aug. 1869 of congestive chills, Miss Kittie L. Hall in the 25th year of her life. Died: 30th at Ironton House, Marcus L. Thomasson at 45 yrs old, was resident of Arcadia Valley for about 15 years. Was known throughout the South East, probably doesn't have one enemy. Funeral conducted by Masonic Fraternity. Died: William Pinkstaff of Pemiscott Co. was shot and killed on Thurs 21st. (Sept 9, 1869) Died: Weds Morn. 2 oclock am, Noah Bishop, 60 yr old died left a wife, 2 daus and 1 son. Died: Thurs 16th Mrs. Jane Mitchell ,De Soto, Consort of Wm. F. Mitchell. Terrill to Mr. L.T. Hine all of Ironton, (Dec 2, 1869) Married: Moore - Lanpher Nov 16, 1869, residence of J. T. Perkins near Fredericktown Mo.,by Father Tucker. Mr. John M. Moore to Miss Amanda Lanpher both of Pilot Knob, Mo. (Dec 2, 1869). Died: Joseph Willey was run over by 2 trains and killed. He fell from a train "The 5 oclock pm train at Middlebrook, Nov. 30th." He was a teamster from Iron Mountain who recently came from PA. (Dec 9, 1869). Married: Ake - Boswell Thurs. 2nd, residence of J. T. Ake, Esq. at Ironton, by Rev. W. M. Williams, Miss Mollie A. Boswell of Clay Co., Ill. to P. Ake of Van Buren, MO.(Dec 9, 1869). Married: Asher - Kelley Nov. 18th, 1869, at Residence of bride's father by J. Elliott Cochran, Mr. Wm. Asher to Miss Melvina Kelley all of Jasper Tnsp., Shannon Co., MO. Died: Deputy U.S. Marshall killed. Felix Whitworth shot Marshall F. W. Moses in Camden Co. about 18 miles from Linn Creek Sat. the 4th. Moses was in company with Assisstant U.S. Assessor named Ratcliff. They were going to arrest Whitworth for running an illicit distillery. They stopped at a house for the night, sitting in front of the fireplace, when the door opened, a gun from someone outside (since known to be Whitworth) fired and shot him near the right nipple, died about 30 minutes later. Whitworth escaped.(Dec 16, 1869) Divorced: Salathiel Ford and Nelly his wife divorced at the Circuit Court of Texas County. A couple of weeks ago. Now they are living happily together. Don't know if they remarried or not. (Dec 16,1869). Died Sunday morn. Dec 12, 1869 at Ironton, MO, Mrs. Nancy B. Whitworth, 44 years old. She was known throughout the community as a Christian woman, wife and mother. Wife of Isaac G. Whitworth. Died at her home, age 43 yrs, 3 mos and 24 das.Typhoid fever. Her parents John and Precia White, member of the Methodist Church. She was born at home in Madison Co., Mo. and raised there. At 20 became a member of the church, in Arcadia V. Brother Whitworth and 7 children left to morn. She will meet little Eliza and Ella who proceeded her in death signed by J.C. Berryman. July 11, 1869: The manufacture of Egyptian mummies in France is on a large scale. One man made no less then 800 relics of the Ptolemeian era for provincial museums. The export business for counterfeit mummies extends over half the globe, even to Egypt. Whence they return to Europe with a sort of guarantee of genuiness. Improvements: Pilot Knob Iron Co. to erect some 8 - 10 frame dwellings on East side of road just West of Knob Creek. July 22, 1869. Tom Davis killed 29 raccoons in one tree in Bois Brule Bottom Monday of last week, Aug. 19, 1869. Letter to Nancy J. Inman on Sept 11, 1869 - Post Office Nov 18, 1869 An Alligator was captured in the river at Alton, Ill. last week 7 1/2 Ft. long and weighed 175 lbs. Covered with thick laminated scales. The remains of an Indian were discovered recently on West Fork Creek near Burksville, KY by some sportsman, beneath a large shelving rock near the summit of a cliff, in nearly as good a state of preservation, and apparently similarly prepared as were the Ptolemies of Ancient Egypt. Nov 25, 1869. Article to copy of how Indians believe the Deluge happened on this continent. Dec 9 1869. The man and mule stuck in mud. Mailbag still under there Patterson Road within 9 miles of the place at a short turn in the road. The mail carrier started Pilot Knob to Patterson 9 Dec 1869. 200 possums were killed in Crawford Co., Ind. one night last week - Thursday, Jan 6, 1870. (Thurs.Oct 13, 1870) Recipe: How to make Nice Candles: Melt together 10 ounce of Mutton Tallow, quarter of an ounce of Camphor, 4 ounce Beeswax and 2 ounce Alum. Dip or mould them. Died: General Robert E. Lee died of congestion of the brain on the 12th, at Lexington, VA. He was 63yrs 8mos and 23das. His loss is universally lamented. (Oct 20, 1870) Died: Mr. W. R. Crippen of Potosi was murdered and robbed in Ripley County some 2 or 3 miles south of Doniphan. He peddled stoves and tin ware through the lower counties in a wagon and team of four horses. He was accompanied by a young man as a helper, whom he had but recently engaged, and it is thought that this young man, assisted by a comrade, who had been noticed as following McCrippen's wagon on horseback, committed the foul deed.(Oct 27, 1870). Died: Bellevue, MO. November 7th, 1870. On last Thursday, Mr. M.C. Miller left home to go to Pilot Knob with his team and wagon. He became intoxicated while at the Knob and started home by way of Iron Mountain. He lost control of the team, he was thrown and his head was smashed by the wagon wheel. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss. Thursday, April 6, 1871. Suicide: Last Saturday, young man, John Boatwright shot himself thru the heart. Has been threatening to kill himself for some time., Tried to get poison from Dr. Haller who refused him, He took a rifle and went to an old farm about 2 miles west of Pilot Knob formerly occup. by the Boatwright family, but now inhabited by an old man engaged in hauling wood for the Pilot Knob Co. Entering the unoccupied house he placed the breech of the rifle upon the floor, with the muzzle to his breast and discharged the gun by touching the trigger with the ramrod upon one side of him and the rifle on the other side. Cause of this was a love affair. The deceased leaves a mother and 2 sisters who reside in Pilot Knob. Marriage: At Flora Ill, on Thursday 30th by Rev. Mr. Henry, Mr. John Reel of Ironton, Mo. to Miss Ruth Boswell of Clay Co., Ill. (April 6, 1871) Miscellaneous: Danville, Ill. furnishes a married girl 12 years old and 6 months. The husband is 40. Died: Henry B. Gratiot Representative to the Gen. Assembly from Washington Co. died in St. Louis last Saturday. He was unable to attend the Legislature last winter excepting a few days in the beginning of the session. He was 83.(April 13, 1871.) Miscellaneous: Some Chinese fisherman caught at the entrance to the bay of San Diego, CA a green sea turtle which measured 4 ft 6 in and weighted 335 lbs. Miscellaneous: A tigress killed in India destroyed 140 people in 7 years. Many people had left the area and a wide area of the country had been abandoned ( April 20, 1871.) Miscellaneous: In Mass. there are buried 9 brothers in a grave yard, all of whom had arrived at Mans estate, the eldest 79 the youngest 28 years. All but one leaving a family. All were buried within 40 roads of the spot where they were born. (April 29,1871). Murder: (May 4, 1871) Barnum was shot recently in Texas Co., while plowing his field, he was a notable citizen, his murderer is unknown. Murder: Barton killed in Mississippi Co. by Bratcher who defies the law and its officers.(May 11, 1871.) Murder: (May 18,1 871) The man who killed Deputy Collector Jenkins at New Madrid a short time ago has himself been killed at that place. Died: May 20, 1871, Mrs. Elizabeth Barnacal died at 52 years. She was Sister Elizabeth, a member of the Order of Good Templars, of Pilot Knob Lodge, No. 113. She leaves a husband and children (June 1, 1871). Miscellaneous: June 15, 1871, A religious fanatic in Germany has willed that his body be embalmed and nailed to the cross, and placed in the organ loft of the church. This done the church receives 68 thousand guldens. Miscellaneous: A preacher in Somerville, Mass. asserted in a sermon on a Sunday that the town is the wickedest in the U.S. Only 2700 of the 16,000 inhabitants ever go to church. Married: June 13, 1871 by Judge Peterson, Dr. J. Villars to Miss Belle Gregory, both of Madison Co., MO. Miscellaneous: Canton, Ill. A farmer saw a large rat carrying a full sized ear of corn in his mouth, with head erect. At the same time his tail was wrapped around another large ear and he was dragging it behind him. Miscellaneous: In New Jersey recently, a boy drowned while bathing in the Pen Horn Creek. Two Canadians seeing men dragging the creek for the body approached and told them they would try an experiment. The filled bottles with quick lime and tightly corked them, threw them in the creek. About an hour later one of the bottles burst loudly and the body rose. They couldn't explain how it works but when the bottle floats over the body, it explodes loudly and the body rises in the water. (June 29,1871) Murder: June 29, 1871 Iron Mountain, Thursday last week. Knight, a man believed to be partially of African descent was riding in the direction of Iron Mtn. on horse back. He was waylaid and shot by 3 men upon a public road. He was found and soon after took home. Sheriff Walker captured the 3 at Annapokis on Sat. morning. They were taken to Farmington jail to await trial. Born: Iron Mtn, Saturday 24th, Mr. ___Moore, he's teething. His parents were delighted at his arrival. John promises him a new hat and a pair of boots by the first snow. June 29, 1871. Miscellaneous: A man is now repairing his house, which was built 237 years ago in Medford, Mass. Died: Last month, Dr. G. Q. Berryman found a man lying on a public road about 2 miles from Ironton. He was in a critical condition, had a malignant fever, for 3-4 days. The doctors did what they could. Mr. Henry our county jailer took care of him. He kept getting worse. The man told that he had been sick for some time. His name was Michael Grady formerly from Baton Rouge, LA, where he had worked on a levee. He left it and came to St. Louis. Took the IMRR for the purpose of working on the Railroad. He died Sun. morn. about 11 am. He was buried Sun. Evenning. He left no effects. He had a paper on him that said Rush and Galooley, Pilot Knob.
