PORTER History of Jackson County Page 924-925 Ref: 977.841 H62b Farmer, section 29, post-office Blue Springs, was born January 27, 1826, in Rutherford County, Tennessee and in 1833 his parents immigrated to Cass County, Missouri, and remained there until 1846. Hugh received his education in the common schools of this county, and assisted his father on the farm.. he came to Jackson County and engaged in farming. In the spring of 1850 he went to Colorado, engaged in teaming, and returned to this county in 1853, where he has since resided, excepting about four months spent with the State Militia. His farm contains 320 acres of well improved land. He was married to Miss Susan M. Gibson September 28, 1854. She is a native of this county. They have had eleven children, nine of who are living: Sarah E (now Mrs. Brizendine), Elizabeth J.(now Mrs. Gore), Silas W., Rosa B., Samuel J., Dora A., James, Clay., and Georgie. He first served in the state militia under Captain Smith and then enlisted in the confederate army. He served in the battle fought for control of Independence and during this engagement had three horses shot from under him. He received his discharge from the service some time later on account of ill health. copied GJS Personal note: Hugh Alexander Porter was the son of Samuel and Jane Laughlin Porter. His grandmother was Elizabeth Dunkin Porter w/o Samuel Porter of Castlewood, Russell County, Virginia. Hugh's grandparents, his father and Uncle Hugh, whom he was named for, his grandmother Elizabeth Alexander Laughlin, and great uncle Captain John Dunkin were captured by the Indians at Martin's Station, Kentucky June 28,1780 and marched to Detroit, MI and on to Montreal, Canada where they were held captive for 2 years. Samuel G. Porter married Jane Laughlin in Rutherford Co., TN May 16, 1806 and migrated on to Cass County, Missouri where they are buried in Reid Cemetery. Many of the family member were scattered by then into Cass and Jackson Counties. Hugh's grandmother Elizabeth Dunkin Porter is buried in Union Cemetery in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. She lived out her remaining years after the death of her husband Samuel in 1820 , Russell Co., Va, with her son James W. Porter (brother of Samuel G.
