Courtney-Mann Cemetery Information provided by Cathy Martin Courtney-Mann Cemetery is located off 291 Highway, on Old Closed Road in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. It is thought to have originated as a family burial ground. Its one acre of land is composed of one-quarter acre from each of four adjoining family farms. Enoch Smith owned the SW quarter section (S14, T50, R32W); Jesse Smith (my great-great-great-grandfather) owned the farm to the northwest; the east half of the cemetery (S13), is on land we also believe other family members had owned. Jesse Smith lived on his farm until his death in 1876. Enoch Smith lived on the adjacent farm until 1887, when he sold it and moved to Vernon County. Family tradition tells that Enoch and three other family members created the cemetery (his 1910 obituary verifies that he helped lay it out). William Smith, father of Jesse and Enoch, who died 7-28-1841, is buried there, and is believed to have been the first person buried in Courtney-Mann Cemetery. This very old cemetery was vandalized many times over the years; stones were smashed, and some graves were dug up. Old Closed Road (as its name indicates) was in such bad shape from years of underground mining, that it was not safe to drive on, and one had to walk up the road and through unkempt woods to reach the cemetery. But thanks to the efforts of a local business, and other interested community groups, the road has been repaired, and the cemetery has been restored (though there are still many unmarked graves, the history of some, which I am sorry to say are now most likely lost forever) The following is a list of composed from several surveys of stones found there (an * after the surname indicates those persons I know of who belong in the Smith family lineage either by blood relation or by marriage): Surname Given Name Birth Death Age Barragan Faustino 1944 1945 Birge Mary L.
