Lobb Cemetery, Jackson County, Missouri MEMORIES OF PIONEERS LIVE IN A JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI GRAVE YARD A Story of Tragedy That Struck the Immigrants Is Held in the Lobb Cemetery Near Blue Springs - Several Who Settled in the Community Are Buried There. (This Article was printed the Kansas City Times in 1932) The, old Spring Branch road meandered southeastward from Independence in the 1830's. First it was a trail cut through the wilderness by the pioneers, whose covered wagons drawn by oxen followed the line of least resistance like a slow rivulet that grows to a stream and becomes eventually a mighty current carving out its course. Over it had gone in 1820 the family of Adam Fisher, Kentuckian. There had followed the Lobb family, the Crenshaws, the Bowlins and the Nowlins, from Kentucky and Virginia. In the fall of the year of the late 1830, there came the Crows, father, mother and three or four children the youngest of which was John Crow. Just old enough to toddle about his mother's heavy homespun skirts as she tended the camp fire. The Crow family camped on the banks of Blue Creek twelve miles from the big spring that marked the beginning of the Spring Branch road at Independence. A hundred yards away was the new home of Aquilla Lobb and his family. The tang of wood smoke was in the air, and the smell of boiling pork fat being rendered into lard. Warned of Coming Winter. The leaves had flung out their warning colors before the coming winter. Jacob Crow had much work to do, with timber to be cut and cabins to be built and fuel to be stored. Provisions the Crows lacked they knew could be obtained from the pioneers of the countryside whose mutual dependence made them hospitable. Perhaps Jacob Crow wished to consult with Aquilla Lobb as to the most desirable land available for settlement. And, woman-like, perhaps Mrs. Crow wanted to hear about it. It meant much to both of them. They walked the hundred yards from their camp to the Lobb cabins where Aquilla Lobb welcomed them and told them what they wanted to know. At the campfire their baby, John, slept, and the minutes slipped by. A scream, the terrified cry of a child in agony, sent the parents and Aquilla Lobb running to the campfire. There they found Baby John burned and scalded. He had awakened, and getting up, toddled to the campfire, where he upset a cauldron of boiling fat upon himself and upon the fire. He died in a short time. A Grave Beside the Trail Aquilla Lobb summoned a slave whose name was Anthony and ordered him to dig a grave beside the immigrant trail. The child was buried and the slaves built a low stone wall about the mound of earth. The Crow family settled in the neighborhood and became in turn the helpers for the new arrivals that came in a steady stream out of the East and Southeast. The Crumps arrived, and the Pinkards and the Strodes, and a score of others. Daniel Crump had a daughter whose Christian name is erased by weather from the stone that marks her grave. She died in 1844 when she was 16 years old. She was the second to be buried beside the immigrant trial near the Lobb homestead. Aqua Lob set aside one-half acre of ground for a cemetery and the plot was named the Lobb Cemetery. The low stone wall about the small mound was taken down and another erected by the slaves of the Lobb homestead about the larger plot of ground. Another Pioneer Rests There In that burial ground of pioneers is Adam Fisher, who came to Jackson County in the year that Missouri became a state. He was 37 years old then and his wife, Letty, was three years younger. He was born in 1783 in the struggle of the colonies to effectuate the nation. Washington was not yet President and the colonies were quarreling themselves about their rights and their future. Three years later when Letty was born the question still was unsettled, so those tow grew with the ring of freedom in their ears and it took rood deep in their hearts. In 1812 Adam Fisher was 29 years old. England again challenged American's freedom and Adam Fisher responded. His service in that war is commemorated at his grave in Lobb cemetery by a bronze staff surmounted by a star and anchor circumscribed by a laurel wreath. On the wreath is stamped the legend: In Honor of Service in the War of 1812, On the star in the center appears the initial: N S U S D 1812 The Initials tell that he was in the naval service, United States defense. Below the insignia is a small crosspiece bearing his name. Their Memory Lives. The memory of the pioneers lives in the minds of three persons in eastern Jackson County. One is Benjamin Fisher of Lees Summit, grandson of Adam Fisher. Another is Mrs. Julia Pinkard Bowlin, daughter of Robert Pinkard and widow of James R. Bowlin, who lives with her son, Claude Bowlin, south of Buckner. The third is Ann Lobb Bucier, the daughter of Anthony, the slave who dug the first grave in Lobb cemetery. Ann Lobb Bucier and her husband, Louis Bucier, live on their own farm four miles north of Blue Springs, on land obtained from the Lobb family after they were freed. Benjamin Fisher is 72 years old. His grandfather died in 1860, the year he was born. He knew "Red" Crenshaw and the Crenshaw boys; Jacob Bowlin and James R. Bowlin; Robert Pinkard, James F. Nowlin and the Lobb boys. He owns today a hunting horn and a powder horn that belonged to Adam Fisher. The hunting horn is from a cow and the powder horn from a buffalo. Mrs. Bowlin is 85 years old. In 1847, when she was born. James R. Bowlin was in Mexico and Texas with Doniphan's Missourians. They were married in 1870. Last of Pioneer Family She is the last of the ten children of the pioneer family of Robert Pinkard and she was born Thirteen years after Robert Pinkard left Virginia to come to Missouri. Her most vivid memories are of the Civil War when she and her family and neighbors were driven from their homes by Federal soldiers trying to stamp out bushwhacking. The Pinkards went to Brunswick, MO., and remained until peace was declared. But before they went Julia and her sister took care of a wounded Confederate soldier in the woods near their home four days while the Federals searched for him. The wounded man's father finally was able to take him home. Ann Lobb Bucier tells of the gift of forty-three acres of land by Anthony Lobb, son of Aquilla Lobb, to her father and mother in 1871. The slave family remained faithful to the Lobbs after their freedom was granted and it was in appreciation of that that Anthony Lobb made the gift. Later Ann's parents and uncle acquired seventy-seven acres more by purchase, and then thirty-five acres, giving them a farm of 145 acres. She and Louis Bucier, her husband have retained the second tract of seventy-seven acres and live on it now. Louis Bucier was the slave of a French family near Cape Girardeau, MO.. When he was in his early teens the Federal soldiers adopted him after some fighting near his home. They brought him to Jackson County and left him with a Federal Sympathizer. He was reared on a farm and Married Ann Lobb. NOTE from Lobb Cemetery President Chuck Townsend Lobb Cemetery is three miles north and one and one-half miles west of Blue Springs, MO. The Cemetery has just installed a New white rail fence and is in very good upkeep. In 2002 the City of Independence Designated Lobb Cemetery as a local Historical Landmark. All records are computerized and the cemetery is in the process of photographing all markers so as they can be put on line for all to research.
