Grissom Feb. 18, 1920 End comes Today at home in Cassil Place ---------- Well known Furnature Salesman, 55, Had Resided Here over 35 Years--- Church and Lodge Worker Oliver P. Grissom, 55 years old, and a well known furnature salesman of this city died at 9:15 o'clock this morning at this home, 706 Cassil Place. Death was due to uraemic poinoning. He had been in poor health for some time but had only been bedfast since a week ago Sunday. Mr. Grissom came to Carthage with his parents, Elder and Mrs. J.C. Grissom, when 17 years old. He had resided here since except for about 18 months spent in Joplin, where he moved about two years ago to take a position with the Joplin Furnature Company, with which he since has been connected. He moved his family back to Carthage in 1919. Before going to Joplin he had been connected with the Carthage Furnature & Carpet Company and its predecessor, G.C. Howenstein for 22 years. He had always followed the furnature business as his vocation. Mr. Grissom was born September 13, 1864 in Cicero, Ind. After coming to Carthage he joined the Baptist Church, of which he has been a member since 1886. For years Mr. grissom had been one of the leading members of the First Baptist Church of Carthage. He was a deacon at the time of his death. He was also a member of the W.O.W. and Knoghts and Ladies of Security Lodges. He was married December 16 1896, to Sallie R. Whaley, whose home was near Pierce Cirty. The wife and four children are the immediate ;members of his family who survive. The Children are: Loula, Martella, Charley, and Phillip, all living at home. His mother, Mrs. J.C. Grissom of Carthage, and four brothers also survive. The brothers are: Fred Grissom of Rochester, N.Y.; Wesley Grissom, of Kansas City, Frank and Robert C. grissom of Carthage, One brother Al Grissom, died in New York January 30, and was brought here for the funeral. Funeral arrangements have not been made, pending word from relatives, but services will probably be held Friday * O.P. GRISSOM DEAD ----------------- Stroke Fatal to Well-Known Carthage Woman --------------------- Funeral Serives will Be Tommorrow Afternoon -- Had lived here 45 Years -------------------------- Mrs. O.P. Grissom, 67, a resident of Carthage 45 years, passed away at 10:45 o'clock last night at Stone memoiral hospital. Mrs. Grissom suffered a stroke of paralysis last thursday and the following day was moved form her home, 525 West Central Avenue, to the hospital. She suffered a second stroke Sunday, her entire body being affected. Since that time her condition had been critical. Mrs. Grissom had been in failing health the last two years. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Knell service home. the Rev. W.W. Pierce, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will be in charge, assisted by the Rev. F.Y. Campbell of Pittsburg, Kans., formerly of carthage. Burial will be in Park cemetery. Born October 20, 1864, in forest home, Lawrence county, Missouri, Sally Rebecca Grissom received her education in the rural schools of that district and attended the PIerce City Baptist college three years. She was married December 16, 1886 to O.P. Grissom in Forest Home and moved to Carthage immediately following the ceremony. Mr. Grissom for many years was connected with the Carthage Furnature and Carpet Company, now the Cline Furnature Company, and later was with the Joplin Furnature Company, He passed away in 1920. Mrs. Grissom became a member of the Baptist Church while a student at the college in Pierce City. She transferred her membership here in 1887 and had been an active member in the Carthage Church since that time. Surviving are two sons, Charles o. Grissom of Carthage and Phillip Grissom of Topika, Kans.; two daughters, Miss Loula grissom who made her home with her mother; and Mrs. J.V. Lair of Kansas City; a brother, S.A. Whaley of Stotts City; a sister, Ms. Mattie J. Corl of Houston, texas; four grandchildren, charles and Phyllis Lair of Kansas City, and Charles and Gene Grissom of Carthage, and two step grandchildren Lillian Nell and Ann Doris Dorsey of Carthage. Mrs. Grissom's children were all here when she passed away. Malissa Ann Grissom, 89. a resident of Carthage about 55 years, died suddenly at 10:30 o'clock this morning at her home, 700 East Chestnut street. Mrs.. Grissom was injured in a fall more than three years ago and about a year ago she fell again and was confined to her bed for a time. Her health, however, during the last several months apparently had been good for one of her age. She became ill after retiring last night but was able to be up this morning. Her physician was summoned this morning and she was ordered to bed. She died shortly after he left the house. Mr..s Grissom was born February 7, 1847, in Indiana, she was married to Joseph C. Grissom on March 19, 1863, in Cicero Ind.. Mr.. and Mrs... Grissom came to Carthage on October 29, 1881. He was a minister in the Christian Church and preached for many years in the rural churches throughout Jasper County. Mr... Grissom also was foreman of the Cowgill & Hill Cooper shop here 13 years. He died February 11, 1917. Mrs... Grissom had lived in the house where she passed away about 30 years. Surviving Mrs... Grissom are four sons, J. Frank Grissom, at home, J.W. Grissom of Kansas City, R.C. Grissom, secretary of the Carthage Chamber of Commerce and Fred O. grissom of Lakeport, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Miss Laura Foland, Mrs... Otis Burrel and Miss Loula Grissom of Carthage are nieces of Mrs..Grissom and George Foland, Otto Foland and Charles Grissom of Carthage are nephews. Mrs... grissom was a member of the First Christian Church. She also was a member of the Women's Relief Corps. GRISSOM DEAD; WIDELY KNOWN JASPER COUNTY MAN --------------------- Had resided in County 35 Years ---was Civil War Ve- tran. ------------------------ FUNERAL THIS AFTERNOON ------------------------ Elder J.C. Grissom, a widely known citizen of Jasper County and a veteran of the civil war and survivor of the battle of Shiloh, died at 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at his home, No 700 East Chestnut street. Mr.. Grissom was 78 years old. He had been ill five weeks last Friday night. An attack of grip followed by a general breakdown resulted in his death. Born in Cicero, Ind.., February 21, 1839, Mr.. Grissom enlisted in the Indiana volunteers when he was 21 years old and immediately saw active service. He was in the battle of Shiloh and a short time later took part in the three days' battle of Cortinth. Poor health caused Mr.. Grissom to be sent to a hospital and was discharged from the service in October, 1862 CAPTAIN IN SHERMAN'S ARMY His mother nursed him back to health. March 18, 1863, he was married to Malissa Ann Foland at Cicero. On January 3, 1864, he re-enlisted, this time joining Company H of the 130th Indiana volunteers. He was a sergeant. he participated in battles at Marrietts and Atlanta, Georgia, and at Nashville and Kinston, Tenn. He served in Sherman's army under Colonel C.S. Parrish and later was with General Thomas when that general's command made the famous chase after General Hood. March 3, 1865, Grissom re-joined Sherman's Army at Goldsboro, N.C., and on October 8 of that year he became Captain. December 2, 1865, he was mustered out of the service. A MINISTER OF CHRISTIAN CHURCH After the close of the war Mr.. Grissom was ordained a minister in the company's cooperage. He has been retir- however, and in 1879 he moved to Illinois and in 1881 the family moved to Jasper County. Elder Grissom never held a regular pastorate but preached at many churches over the county. He became widely known and had an unusual large circle of warm friends. For twelve years Mr.. Grissom was foreman of the Cowgill & Hill companies cooperage. He has been retired from active work other than the ministry for several years. Mr.. and Mrs.. Grissom celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, March 18, 1913. It was a largely attended affair. WIFE AND SIX CHILDREN SURVIVE. Mrs.. Grissom and six sons are the survivors. the sons are: O.P. Grissom, Frank Grissom, R.C. Grissom, J.W. Grissom, Fred O. Grissom, and J.A. Grissom. The three first named reside in Carthage, J.W. Grissom lives in Kansas City and J.A. Grissom's home is in Glasgow, Mont., Fred O. Grissom, from Missoula, Mont., is the only son who will not be here for the funeral. J.A. Grissom will arrive in the morning. Allen W. Grissom of Unionville, Ind.. and Henry Grissom of Marion, Ind.. are brothers. Mrs.. E.E. Harbaugh of Smithville, Mo a niece, is here for the funeral. Mr.. and Mrs.. J.W. Grissom and son, Gerald, of Kansas City, their son Marvin, of Parsons, Kans., and their daughter, Mrs.. Colena Meyer of Joplin, are here. Services will be held at the home at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. Charles H. Swift will be in charge. Mr.. Grissom was a member of the G.A.R. and that organization and the W.R.C. will attend the funeral in a body. The G.A.R. will conduct services at the Church and the grave. The pallbearers will be: J.W. Trowbridge, W.T. McCune, H.T. Dale, J. T. B. Yaryan, G.C. Howenstein, W.A. Ritchart.
