Birth: 5th of twelve know children, she in McMinn County, Tennessee Lucy's father, Norris C Hood, was one of the more significant early pioneers of Jasper county, prior to and following the civil war as was she with her first husband, L P Cunningham, both, also major contributors to the well being and growth of Jasper county, Missouri. Records indicate Lucy L. Hood in 1861, with her sisters, made a special flag, which for safety reasons within this mixed community, was worn by her among her petticoats. HOWEVER on July 4, 1861 when Union forces, under Colonel Franz Sigel (consulted with Lucy's father, a two term sheriff), marched into town of some 500 people via the Neosho road, Lucy mounted the stile on west side of the courthouse lawn, (across street from their log home, destroyed during war, as were most others) greeting the men in blue by removing her red, white and blue "petticoat" and in front of God and everyone (a scene now painted by Andy Thomas), waving it to the accompaniment of loud cheers, uttered in German. Neighboring Myra Shirley (the infamous Belle Star) was probably looking on from the safety of the Carthage House. (from; Marvin L Van Gilder's book; Jasper County, The First Two Hundred Years. Following day was one of the first civil war battles, Battle of Carthage, 48 killed, 156 wounded, court house recieving Confederate artillery shelling. Her mother, Malinda/Monita Bond, may have died before 1865 Kansas census showing father removed his family of eleven children and ~ ~ Jasper County records ~ ~ to the safety of Kansas from Carthage during the war. The Norris family returned to Carthage to find it destroyed during the war except for three buildings. Father built them a new home three blocks west on Third street, a temporary court house was built where their log home once stood, to be removed with Timothy Regan (1822-1897) 1868 building, first brick commericial building on the square, later known as Center Building, owned by James Luke (1854-1925) then son, David C Luke (1925-1993). Her father returned the Jasper county records from Fort Scott Kansas.
