Sherwood Cemetery, Jasper Co., MO Sherwood Cemetery is located at the end of a gravel road, about a quarter mile east of the intersection of JJ highway and Fir road. Although the cemetery is not visible from Fir road, two large stone posts are visible on either side of the entrance to the gravel road. Sherwood Cemetery was established when the city was platted by Daniel Hunt. It was common during the period that Sherwood existed to have family burial plots on the homestead, and therefore Sherwood cemetery did not command the burial of all the dead of the town. It is uncertain how many are buried in the cemetery since there are no records of burials known, and many removals from the cemetery have been made over the years. All lists of the cemetery’s population have been compiled from recent readings of head stones. Undoubtedly there are many more buried within the cemetery than can be noted because of numerous rocks that seem to have been used as primitive headstones. The cemetery has more rocks than headstones; rocks that are organized in lines as are headstones in current cemeteries. The majority of the headstones that contain inscriptions come from around the turn of the century; after Sherwood was destroyed. It is rumored that after the destruction of the town, the cemetery became a burial site for paupers. Sherwood Cemetery, through the years, was not been maintained and became overgrown with tall grass and small trees. Several attempts have been made by citizens and Boy Scout Troop 70 of Carl Junction to restore and maintain the cemetery. Because of the size and length of time involved in such a task, it has yet to be accomplished. Today, the cemetery remains to be abandoned and overgrown. Cemetery List The following is a list compiled from two readings of the tombstones in the cemetery.
