He had been unconscious since midnight and had been realized that the end was only a question of hours.     Mr Luke was 70 years old. Several weeks ago he underwent several operations and for a time it was thought his chances wee good for recovery, despite his age. For the past week, however symptoms had not been favorable ad his condition gradually had grown more grave.     Probably few citizens of Jasper count was better known than Mr Luke. Born in Calstock, Cornwall, England, of a poor family, he first became a miner in the tin mines of that country, but came to America when a young man. Being a miner he was attracted to the zinc fields of southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas, where for many years he worked as a day laborer. Later he became interested in mine operating. He was a natural trader and his foresight and ability in this way, as well as successful mine operations, amassed a fortune.     At his death he was an extensive land owner, building interests in mining properties, farm lands and several pieces of business property in Carthage, including the Center building on the west of the square. He also owned Hallwood farm, northwest of Carthage, rated as one of the best farms in Jasper county.     During his lifetime Mr Luke made several visits to his native home in England. Some years ago he erected a chapel in Calstock in memory of his mother,and in other ways remembered and bided in public enterprises there.     In Carthage and Jasper county he had been interested in many public enterprises. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.     Mr Luke was born December 12, 1854. He was thrice married, having been married to Miss Mariam Chapelle of Los Angles, Calif about five years ago. The widow and two small sons, James, Jr two years old, and David [1924MO-1993MO], a baby, survive. These are the only immediate relatives. Sidney Knight, Carthage insurance man and John Knight, residing southwest of Carthage, are nephews and Mrs S C Boggess [1876ENG-1928MO, my grandmother] of city is a niece.     Funeral arrangements have not been made.        <~~   ~~   ~~   ~~   ~~   ~~> Carthage Evening Press, Thursday, June 4, 1925       LUKE   FUNERAL   TOMORROW                ~~~~~~~~        SERVICES WILL BE CONDUCTED          AT HOME AT 4 O'CLOCK             ~~~~~~~~    Rev Dr Clinton of Atlanta Will Have           Charge, Assisted by Dr                 O J Carder                 ~~~~~~~~~     The funeral of James Luke, prominent Carthage citizen who died yesterday afternoon at his home, corner of Main and Ninth streets, will be conducted from the residence at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Rev Dr W G Clinton, of Atlanta, Ga, former pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal curch here and a close personal friend of Mr Luke, will conduct the services, assisted by Dr O Carder, pastor of the church. Dr Clinton will arrive in Carthage tomorrow morning.     Mrs Marian Wright Powers will sing the funeral hymns.     The following have been selected as pallbearers:     Honorary -- F W Steadley, Dr D E Hewitt, C W Rinehart, M F Fishburn, Judge J D Perkins, Judge Howard Gray, J E Lang, H S Cowgill and Allen McReynolds.     Active -- Joseph Pile of Joplin, Kent D Steadley, John Flanigan, Frank R Williams, Dr L B Clinton, and J L Berkebile.     The body will be returned to the home from Knell mortuary tomorrow morning.     Mr Luke's pleasant personality won for him an unusually large number of friends and scores of persons from over the district will gather here tomorrow to attend the last rites.     Mr Luke had been a resident of Carthage 39 years. Coming to America when 19 years old. He first located at Granby and soon afterwards went to Galena, Kans, where his mining activities were centered before moving to Carthage. Shortly after coming to this city Mr Luke became associated with Byron Ash of this city in mining projects, this association continuing until their retirement from active business a few years ago. Mr Luke formerly was a director in the Bank of Carthage here, but sold his interests in that institution a few years ago. He was virtually a life-long member of the Methodist Episcopal church.     The body will be laid at rest in Park cemetery. [Block 33; Lot 4]       Additional Comments: James Luke's niece Kate Knight lived with him four years until wed to my grandfather S C Boggess. Their first born, my father, was named Luke J, born at 412 east Third street, Carthage, his grandmother Sarah Elizabeth (Wood) Boggess' home, while parents home was in Galena, KS. James Luke's children were with his third and last wife. Son, David C Luke married June Digby, they had one daughter Lisa Luke who has visted Calstock, Cornwall, England and relatives while residing (for a while on the Hallwood farm) in Carthage till death in 1993.
