WOOD IS DEAD               ~~~~~~~       VETERAN CONTRACTOR SUC-           CUMBS TODAY AT 89               ~~~~~~~~    He Constructed Phone System Here     in 1896 and Erected Many Build-     ings ~~ Funeral Will Be Tuesday                 ~~~~~~~     Death this morning claimed George B Wood, 89, retired Carthage contractor and former city councilman,     Mr Wood passed away at 6:30 o'clock at his home, 1320 South Main street, following an illness of more than five months. He was stricken last September 12 and for a time was a patient in McCune-Brooks hospital. His illness was due principaily to a complication of ailments incident to ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~         HIS    PICTURE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ old age. He was able to sit up a part of each day until last November 29, and since then he had been confined to his bed. Last Wednesday Mt Wood's condition became more critical and at 1 o'clock Thursday morning he lapsed into a coma from which he failed to rally.     Last Tuesday marked Mr Wood's 89th birthday. He was born January 28, 1852 in Harrison county, West Virginia. He was the last of a family of 10 children ~~ six boys and four girls.         ~ By River to St Louis ~     On June 21, 1873, George Wood married at Wheeling, W Va, to Miss Emma J Howell, by the Rev Marcus Ormand, a Presbyterian minister. Nine years later the couple came to Carthage to make their home. Mr and Mrs Wood made the trip to St Louis by water, coming down the Ohio river to Cario, where they changed to a Mississippi river steamer. At St Lois they boarded a Frisco train and arrived here October 13, 1882.   Being a contractor, Mr Wood built a home on East Third street where they lived a number of years. Among the structures erected by Mr Wood are the First Methodists church, the former Carthage Collegiate Institute on South Main street where Mark Twain school now stands, the old Carthage high school, now the Manual Arts building, the old Washington and Irving schools and the home on Grand avenue now occupied by Mr and Mrs H S Cowgill. He also erected the Scotch building in Neosho, now the New England hotel.     Mr Wood graded and graveled (sic) many of the streets in Carthage and in 1886-1887, he constructed a large portion of the Frisco railroad extending from Ft Smith, Ark to Paris, Texas. He also installed the Home Telephone system here.         ~ A Resident 55 Years ~     In 1896 Mr Wood and his family went to Wheeling where he was engaged in constructing telephone systems in neighboring towns for a period of three years, after which they returned to Carthage. Mr Wood has been a resident of Carthage more than 55 years.     Surviving Mr Wood are two daughters, Miss Laura [May] Wood, at home and Mrs Gertrude Shaver of Dakota, IL and a granddaughter, Mrs L J Walker of Berlin, Wis. S C Boggess and Hale Boggess of Carthage are nephews and Mrs Ed H Irwin of Carthage is a niece. Mrs Wood passed away July 9 (sic, 19th), 1935.     Mrs Shaver visited her father twice after he was stiken last summer and Mrs Walker was here last summer. Mrs Shaver is ill and will not be able to return at this time.     Funeral services will be held 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Knell service home. Rev Dr E E Mace pastor of First Presbyterian church of which Mr Wood long had been a member, will be in charge assisted by Alfred Jenkins, pastor of Main Street Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Park cemetery.   **************************************        THE CARTHAGE PRESS, WEDNSDAY, JANUARY 5, 1941     ------------------------------------------          FUNERAL OF G B WOOD                ~~~~~~~     Dr Mace and Alfred Jenkins Conducted                the Services     Last rites for George B Wood were conducted at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Knell ervice home by Rev Dr E E Mace, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. He was assisted by Alfred Jenkins, pastor of Main Street Presbyterian church. A quartet composed of Miss Frances Cushman, Mrs Dryden Reynolds, Walter Evans, and John Holic sang "Abide With Me" Miss Charlotte Fry played the accompaniment.     Pallbearers were W T Lawhead, Howard Campbell, Ora Askins, Max Logan, Sid Knight, and Ward L Schrantz. Burial was in Park cemetery.     Mrs C J Shaver of Dakota, IL and her daughter, Mrs L J Walker of Berlin,Wis who were there for the services, left this morning on route to their homes. They will spend tonight in St Louis and with Mrs Walker's brother-in-law and go on tomorrow to their homes. Mrs Shaver is daughter of Mr Wood. The Rev R J Kyle and his son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs W C Kyle of Marionville,[MO] also attended the services for Mrs Wood. They returned last night to Marionville.
