Biographical Sketch of Amos L. Colman, Jefferson County, Missouri

Amos L. Colman, recorder of deeds, Jefferson County, is a native of
Monroe County, Ill., and was born in 1854, the youngest but one of the
children born to Jeremiah and Elvira (Robison) Colman.  Jeremiah Col-
man, who was of English descent, was born in Pennsylvania in 1814, and
was married at the age of twenty-one in Monroe County, Ill., afterward
removing to Macoupin County, Ill., where he remained until 1869, when
he located in Jefferson County, Mo., purchasing the De Soto Mills,
which he has since owned; he served several years as mayor of De Soto.
Mrs. Elvira Colman was born in Illinois in 1815, and died in 1883, a
member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  Amos L. was reared at home,
remaining with his parents until his twenty-fourth year and receiving 
a common school education.  In early life he assisted his father in 
the mill, and later leased the same, conducting it for six years.  He
then engaged in mercantile pursuits in De Soto for about two and one
half years, and in 1886, was brought forward by the Republican party as
a candidate for the office of recorder, to which position he was elec-
ted, assuming the duties of the same the following January; he has 
proved himself an efficient and trustworthy public official.  In Feb-
ruary, 1878 he married Emma, daughter of Louis and Annette Mathieu,
natives of France.  Mrs. Colman is a native of the State of Iowa.
Seven children have been born to this marriage, of whom three are now
living.  Mr. Colman is a member of the I. O. O. F.
