LACLEDE COUNTY, MISSOURI - BIOGRAPHIES - JOHN BOHANNON JOHN BOHANNON 1824 - 1907 John Bohannon was born 24 November 1824 in Tennessee, married 5 May 1842, Roane Co. Tennessee to Elizabeth Esther, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Smith) Easter. Elizabeth was born 11 August 1824, Roane Co. Tennessee. The spelling of the name Easter became Esther, when some members of the family came to Missouri. John And Elizabeth Bohannon brought their family to Camden Co. Missiouri during the early 1850's but had a brief stay in Carroll Co. Arkansas before settling in Hooker township, Laclede Co. Missouri. John was a farmer and for a time was a deputy sheriff of Laclede Co. John killed a cattle thief while he was deputy sheriff. A trial was held and he was exonerated. Elizabeth (Esther) Bohannon died 14 December 1871 and was buried in Liberty churchyard, Laclede Co., Mo. John married, second, 19 August 1872, Leclede Co. to Lucy E. Wilson, daughter of Isaac J. and Frances J. Wilson. She was born 25 April 1850 in Missouri. John died 24 September 1907, Laclede Co. John and first wife, Elizabeth, were the parents of five children: Rachel Minerva, born 1843, married John Lyle Houston; Joseph C. born 1846, married first, Luentice L. Goss, second, Martha Dodds; Malinda born 1849, married William Franklin Lambeth; Thomas G. born 1852, married Ellen Hillhouse; and James W. born 1855, married Margaret Henry. Thomas G. Bohannon was born 15 July 1852, Camden Co. Mo., married 30 Nov. 1869 to Ellen Hillhouse, duaghter of Josiah Minter and margaret (Watts) Hillhouse. Ellen was born 26 January 1852, Camden Co. and died 20 July 1936 in Wister, Oklahoma. Thomas owned some farm land near Sleeper, Laclede Co. on the Goodwin Hollow. He sold this farm and moved to Pulaski Co. where he farmed some but also was a trader and stock dealer. Tom was attacked by a Mr. Fullbright in a school argument and Tom shot him in self defense. A trial was held in Camden Co. and he was exonerated. In 1908, he moved to the Indian Territoy in Oklahoma and roped ponies from the range and shipped them back to Missouri. He died 8 November 1923 in Wister, LeFlore Co., Oklahoma. Thomas and Ellen Bohannon were the parents of ten children: Robert E. Lee, born 1871, married Minnie E Hudson; Nellie born 1873, died 1951, married Sim Traw; Everett born 1874, died 1944; Medda born 1877, died 1927, married Fritz Heinzleman; Omer born 1879, died 1956, married Inez (maiden name unknown); Deavor born 1881, married first, Iva Clark, second, Annie (maiden name unknown); Nealey born 1884, died 1954; Katy born 1886, died 1887; Leonard born 1889, married Dora Crow; Jessie Hughes born 1892, died 1953. Robert E. Lee Bohannon was born 19 January 1871, Camden Co. Mo., married Minnie E. Hudson, daughter of Henry and Lavinia Hudson. Minnie was born 6 May 1873 in Wisconsin and died 14 August 1913, Richland, Mo. Robert E. Lee was a merchant in Richland since 1900. He also was a trader and stock dealer. He died 18 August 1947, Richland, Pulaski Co., Mo. Robert E. Lee and Minnie are the parents of three sons: Robert, who died under two years of age; Earl Hudson, born 1898, married first, Ruby Howlett, second, Lena Cook; and Joseph Lynn Bohannon. Joseph Lynn Bohannon was born 11 June 1900, Richland, Pulaski Co., Mo. He married first 1921 to Edna Matilda Lutz, second, 1970, to Chadna Cunninghamk, third, 1971, to Lottie Traw. Joseph Lynn served in World War I and now resides on 70 acres which his father purchased in early 1900's. He started in business with his father as Bohannon & Son the first of January 1919. The business is continuing under the third generation as Joseph Lynn is now in business with his two sons by his first wife, Edna, Edward Lee and Lloyd William Bohannon. by J. Lynn Bohannon 406 S. Pine St. Richland, Mo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ELIJAH BOHANNON 1812 - Elijah Bohannon was born in Tennessee. The date of his birth is recorded in his Bible as being on July 15, 1812. His Bible has been handed down from one generation to another. It now belongs to one of his great-granddaughters, Mamie (Davis) McMillan. Elijah married Rachel Odle on December 3, 1829. Rachel was born April 15, 1810 in Tennessee. They moved from White County, Tennessee to Missouri before their fourth child was born in 1837. Elijah and his family were listed in the 1840 United States Government Census of Pulaski County, Missouri. When the 1850 Census was taken, they were living in Wright County, Missouri. Later that year they moved to Laclede County. Elijah built a large two story log house, with split log floors and a fireplace, for his family to live in. His house was built on the point of a hill overlooking the Steins Creek Valley in the southern part of the county. There is a beautiful view of the valley from his home. This house is still standing and is located on the property of Leslie Murrell. Elijah and Rachel spent the remainder of their days in Laclede County. They were buried in the Moore Cemetery in Wright County. The Moore Cemetery is located near the Laclede-Wright County Line. The names of their children and the dates of their birth were recorded in the Family Bible as follows: Almiry Jane was born Novmeber 3, 1830. She was living with her parents in 1870. She probably never married. William David was born October 16, 1832. Family tradition says that he was killed during the Civil War. But, he was not listed on the 1840, 1850 or 1860 Census records. Arlamaeda Ann was born October 18, 1834. She married Luke Mitchell. Their son's name was recorded in Elijah's Bible as "Luis." He was born May 17, 1852. Arlamaeda and Luke died of yellow fever when Lewis was a child. After the death of his parents, Lewis lived with his grandparents, Elijah and Rachel. Lewis married Sarah Williams on May 29, 1879. Malinda Caroline was born June 6, 1837 and died January 30, 1911. She married Albert J. Webb in 1861. They became the parents of seven children, Thomas, Mary, William, Albert G., John, Jane and Gaberial. Malinda and Albert are buried at the Mt. Zion No. 3 "Cuba" Cemetery. Francis Marion was born November 3, 1839. He was married three times. His first wife was Lucinda J. Moore. Their two children were Alexander Lafayette and Emmarilar. Emmarilar lived with her grandparents most of her young life. She was born in Arkansas and the date of her birth was recorded in Elijah's Bible as March 6, 1867. Francis Marion's second wife was Adaline Casey. Their children: Elijah L., Manda, James, Marion, Rosa, Walter and Charles. His third wife was Elizabeth Giesler. They became the parents of one daughter, Ada. Francis marion was buried in the Mt. Zion No. 3 "Cuba" Cemetery. Marinda Evaline was born March 4, 1842. The last record of her is the 1860 Laclede County Census. She was living with her parents at that time. George Washington was born March 25, 1844. His wife's name was Jane and their children's names were James, Sally, Allic and Sarah. Arinda Adaline was born November 18, 1847. She married Jeramiah Massey on July 25, 1865. They were living in Laclede County in 1880. Their children's names were Rachel S., James A. and Elijah. Rachel S. Massey's birth was recorded in the Bible of her grandparents as occuring on Sugust 29, 1866. The Massey Family moved to Oklahoma. Arinda Adaline and Jeramiah are buried there. James Allen Monroe was born January 22, 1846. He married Nancy Ann Casey on November 1, 1866. She was a sister of Francis Marion's second wife, Adaline Casey. They were the parents of William M. and Sarah M. Rachel Samantha was born May 10, 1850. She married James N. Davis and they became the parents of Nancy Adaline, Sarah Eveline, Elijah Mathias and John Eldridge. Rachel S. died at age 91 and is buried in the Davis No. 2 Cemetery. In addition to their own family, Elijah and Rachel reared two of their grandchildren. Elijah Bohannon was my great great uncle. By: Charlotte G. His father was a natiave of Virginia and his mother, a native of Tennessee. In 1825 or 1826 William, Sr. married Margaret R. O'Dell. She was born about 1806. Margaret was a daughter of Enoch and Sarah (Ramsey) O'Dell. Enock was born March 19, 1776 and married Sarah in White County, Tennessee. William Sr. and Margeret were living in White County when their oldest child was born in 1827. By 1834, when their fourth child was born, they were living in Macoupin County, Illinois. Margaret's brother, Samuel O'Dell, was also living in the same county. When James was born in 1839, they were living in what is now Laclede County, Missouri. William Sr. and Margeret became the parents of eight children: Catherine was born December 16, 1827 and married Ashford Hough. Their children: Sarah, Margaret, Lewis Henry, Rachel, David Jackson, John, Mary Jane, James Monroe, Albert Green and two infant sons. Lewis was born April 29, 1829. His first wife was Melvina Wright. They were the parents of two children Sarah and Enoch Carroll. After Melvina died, Lewis took as his second wife Sarah Catherine (Sharp) Coffman. Their children: marget Melverna, Salida, Marion Lafayette, John Lewis, James Monroe, Laura Leona, Fanander Washington, Hardin Theodore, Mollie Theodosia and Frances Ella. Enoch was born in 1831. His first wife was Julia Ann Shirley. Their children: Margaret, Millard Eillmore, Lewis Randolph, Jefferson Davis, Robert Lee, Sarah Catherine, Elijah Monroe and Albert Green. Enoch married his second wife, Mrs. Luzan (----) Farrar, in 1905. Elijah was born in 1833 and married Amanda Elizabeth Weaver. Their children: Sarah Margaret, William Davis, Thomas Jeffersoh, Elijah and Amanda Elizabeth. William Jr. was born September 15, 1836. He married Sarah Robinson. They became the parents of one son, John. After Sarah's death in 1860, William Jr. married Frances Jane Hillhouse and their children were: William Wilson, Sarah Charlotte, Hiram Lee, Laura Elizabeth, Eli Finando, Thomas Berry, Cora Bell, Francis, Nora Dell and Dora Ellen. James D. was born about 1839. He married first ____?___. Tye were the parents of two daughters, Atlanta and Caloona. His second wife was Saletia (Sharp) Roberts. No children were born to this union. Nelson Monroe was born about 1844. The name of his wife is unknown. They were the parents of one child. Margaret was born about 1847 and died November 9, 1873. She never married. On April 10, 1874, Margaret (O'Dell) Bohannon died. William Sr. married his second wife, Mary Ann Ballinger, soon thereafter. William Sr. died March 1, 1887 and was buried beside his two wives in the Bohannon Cemetery. Civil War times brought many hardships. The lack of salt in the Confederate communities was one of the problems. The North had plenty of salt, but would not let the South have any. William Jr. was in the Confederate Army. After sometime in the Army and seeing the turn of events against the South, he joined the Union Army. His wife, Frances, drove a wagon and team to Lebanon to get a barrel of salt. When she returned home, she shared the salt with her Confederate neighbors. The Bohannons were not a people to triffle with. The bushwackers were active in the area, and one gang came to the Bohannon homestead. They asked to see the men of the house. The women directed them to a cabin were the men were. Their directions sent the bushwackers the long way to the cabin. While the bushwackers were taking the long route to the cabin, Frances and Margaret (William Jr.'s wife and sister) ran to the cabin via the shortcut. They told the men that the bushwackers were coming. The bushwackers rode up near the cabin; after looking the situation over, they decided they didn't want any part of the Bohannons and rode away. The Bohannon name is spelled many ways. William Sr. spelled his last name Bohannon, while William Jr. spelled his last name Bohannan. Elijah Bohannon (born 1812) was William Sr., brother.
