Biographical Sketch of Shadrach V. Casey, Laclede County, Missouri

Shadrach V. Casey, who is classed among the prominent and enterprising
farmers of Gasconade township, and one of the largest stock farmers of
the county, was born December 25, 1837, on the place where he now lives
in Laclede county, Missouri.  He is the son of Samuel and Lucretia B. 
(Cayce) Casey.  Samuel Casey was born in Roane county, Tenn., March 20,
1799, and as his father died when he was but six months old, Samuel was
taken and reared by an uncle, Daniel Biebler, of German descent. Samuel
Casey was married in Williamson county, Tenn., and came to Missouri 
about 1832 or 1833, and purchased the place where our subject lives. He
died December 19, 1862.  The mother was born in Williamson county, 
Tenn., January 26, 1817, and was married in that county.  She died June
14, 1871.  They were the parents of eight children, five of whom grew
to maturity, and four now living: Mary J., wife of Mr. Breakfield; 
Shadrach V., Mrs. Amanda H. Nelson and Mrs. Anna B. Adams.  Those de-
ceased were: Thomas B., who was a soldier in the Union army, and came
home on furlough; while at home he was taken out by bushwhackers and
killed, in 1863; Lucretia E., Samuel H., and one infant, not named.
The mother of these children was a member of the Methodist Episcopal
church, and was one of the best of mothers.  Her father was a Baptist
minister of some prominence, and very wealthy.  She was one of thirteen
children.  Shadrach V. Casey lived on the home place until the fall of
1860, and April 12 of that year he married Miss Mary Ann Nelson, who 
was born in what was then Pulaski county, now Laclede county, and was 
the daughter of William and Mahala Nelson.  To this union were born a
family of four children, all living: William S., Mrs. Mary E. Allen,
Mrs. Eliza L. Adams and Thomas H.  The mother of these children died
August 19, 1868, and Mr. Casey took for his second wife Miss Mary C.
Stroup, a native of Wright county, now Laclede county.  She was born
May 5, 1848, and died November 1, 1883.  She was a member of the Chris-
tian church.  One child was born to this union, Anna P.  After his 
first marriage Mr. Casey settled on a farm below where he now lives,
and there remained but one year.  He then returned to the home, and
after remaining there one year moved to a place on the prairie nine
miles east of Lebanon, and at the end of two years again returned to
the home place, where he has since resided.  He enlisted in 1862 in the
Confederate army, and served about five months as a ranger.  He was in 
one skirmish in Wright county, Mo., and then came home.  He was married
the third time, to Miss Mary E. Roberts, who was born in Ohio, and came
to Missouri in 1878.  She was the daughter of Allen C. and Amanda
Roberts, residents of Laclede county.  Mr. and Mrs. Casey are the 
parents of one child, Shadrach Allen.  Mr. Casey has a large farm under
a good state of cultivation; is a Union Labor man in his politics; has
been a member of the school board for many years; is a member of the
Masonic fraternity, the Agricultural Wheel, and is a member of the
Christian Church.  Mrs. Casey is a member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church.
