R. Clough, a prominent farmer and stock raiser of Laclede county, Mo., was born in Summit county, Ohio, and is the son of Jeremiah and Susan (Simpson) Clough, natives of Vermont and Pennsylvania, respect- ively. The Clough family were early settlers of Vermont, and Jeremiah Clough moved from that State to Summit county, Ohio, at quite an early date. Here both parents passed the remainder of their days. Of their seven children, three sons and four daughters, five are now living: Celestia, wife of H. E. Meriner; Jane, wife of T. E. Robinson; Edwin R., Walter W., and Charles. E. R. Clough attained his growth and was edu- cated in Summit county, Ohio. He remained and assisted his father on the farm until 1862, when he enlisted in Company H, One Hundred and Fourth Ohio Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He was at the battle of Knoxville, battle of Atlanta, Franklin, and crossed the mountains to the capture of Fort Fisher. Then his regiment took charge of the surrender of Johnston's army. After his discharge Mr. Clough returned to Ohio, and remained in that State until the latter part of 1865, when he came to St. Louis, thence to Salt Lake City and other cities, prospecting for a location. He visited Old Mexico and Texas, but returned to St. Louis in the latter part of 1866. He was then employed on the now St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad, and remained in the employ of this comopany until 1869, as railroad conductor on pass- enger trains. In 1869 he located at Lebanon and engaged in general merchandising, the firm being known as Clough & Lindsay. This partner- ship was dissolved in 1872, and afterward Mr. Clough engaged in the drug business, which he continued until the spring of 1887, when he moved his stock of drugs to Akron, Ohio. Since that time he has turned his attention to stock raising. He owns over 3,000 acres of land in Laclede county, with several hundred acres under cultivation. He owns one of the finest farms in Laclede county, consisting of 325 acres, all under cultivation, and joining the city of Lebanon. Two hundred acres of this are in meadow land, and on the same he has the fair ground, where he built the race track at his own expense. He has abundance of water on this farm, it being piped 2,500 feet from a magnificent well. Mr. Clough was general superintendent of the Fair the last season, and he is also superintendent of the Lebanon Water Works. He is one of the leading and purshing men of Laclede county, and is a valuable citizen. He owns land in Dakota, Tennessee, Ohio, and has mining interest in Utah. He also has property in Kansas and several other states. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Blue Lodge and Chapter, and is a Republican in his political views. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
