He was a farmer by occupation, and died in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, at the age of sixty three years. The father of the subject of this sketch was a mechanic by trade, which he followed the principal part of his life time. He was elected to the office of county treasurer of his county, and served two successive terms. He was a prominent man and a good citizen. He died in 1867, and the mother many years previous, in 1832. They were the parents of two children, only one now living, S. C. Demuth, who was reared in Ohio and received his education in the schools of that State, completing his education at Granville College. He was placed behind the counter at eleven years of age, and has followed mercantile pur- suits ever since, except at intervals, when attending school. In 1856 he went to Northern Illinois, and from there, in 1858, to Clinton coun- ty, Ill., where he was engaged in mercantile pursuits until 1876. Pre- vious to this, in 1860, he married Miss Mary James, a native of the State of New York, who immigrated with her parents to Illinois when about eight years of age. To Mr. and Mrs. Demuth were born three children: John V., Frederick and Mary. In 1876 Mr. Demuth moved to Lebanon, Mo., engaging in merchandising, which he has since carried on quite extensively. He has a general line of groceries and a full stock. He has had considerable experience in the mercantile line, and has a thorough knowledge of the business. He is a member of the Mas- onic fraternity, also a member of the A. O. U. W., and is a Republican in his political principles. He had the misfortune to lose his life's companion in October, 1888.
