Biographical Sketch of Levi C. Fulbright, Laclede County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Levi C. Fulbright is an old and prominent farmer of Laclede county, Mo., and was born in Haywood county, N. C., February 3, 1811, his parents being William and Rutha (Hollingsworth) Fulbright, who were born in Buncombe and Haywood counties, N. C., January 8, 1785 and September 28, 1791, and died in Missouri September 22, 1843 and April 30, 1874, respectively. At the age of twelve years the father went to Haywood county, where he grew to manhood and married, and in 1818 moved with his family to Tennessee, coming to Missouri five years later, locating in Springfield, where he resided until his death. He and wife were members of the Christian church, and became the parents of thirteen children, twelve sons and one daughter, the following of whom are yet living: Levi C., Henry, David N. and E. R. Since 1830 Levi C. Fulbright has been a resident of Laclede county, and since 1845 has resided on his present farm. He at one time owned 677 acres of land, but after the war was compelled to sell a portion of his estate. During the war he served for about six months in the south- west portion of the state in a volunteer company of Confederate infantry, being a participant in the battle of Oak Hill, in which engagement he was beaten over the head with a sword, which has made him deaf for life; he has also almost lost the use of his shoulder and arm. Since the war he has been trying to retrieve his fallen fortune, but in 1874 his house and all its contents were burned to the ground. He has since rebuilt, and has a cozy and comfortable home. November 29, 1829, he was married to Miss Mary Kyrkendall, who died May 18, 1845 having become the mother of six children, five of whom are living: Susan J. (Hoffman), John L., Matilda Ruth (Story), William H. (deceas- ed), Anna E. (Joiner), and Robert B. Mr. Fulbright afterward married Miss Nancy E. Hillhouse, who was born in Giles county, Tenn., and by whom he became the father of eight children: Roxana (Thompson), Mary L. E. (Jones), Coraline (Pritchett), Ephraim R., Josiah, Daniel, Samuel and Ellen (Jones). Mr. and Mrs. Fulbright are members of the Christian church, the former being the second person baptized in that church in the county, his first wife having been the first person. His son, Ephraim R. Fulbright, was born in Laclede county, Mo., January 11, 1850 and is a prosperous farmer and stock dealer. He made his parents house his home until his marriage, and in his boyhood days received a good common school education. In 1868 he began railroading on the 'Frisco road, and at the end of two years went to Salem, but soon afterward returned home and engaged in farming and stock trading, which has been his occupation up to the present time, and in which he has been very successful. In 1875 he wedded to Miss Fannie Oliver, who was born in Camden county, Mo., November 5, 1854, and is a daughter of Giles and Caroline (Evans) Oliver, who were born in Tennessee, and came to Miss- ouri in 1851, and are still residing in Camden county. The following are their children: Henry, Mary M. (Ragan), Fannie, wife of Mr. Ful- bright, and William. Mr. Oliver died in 1883, since which time his widow has resided with Mr. Fulbright. To the latter and his wife four children have been born: Guy, Floy, Montia and John W. Mr. Fulbright is a Democrat, and a member of the Agricultural Wheel, and his wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
