Biographical Sketch of Martin V. Fulbright, Laclede County, Missouri

Martin V. Fulbright, a successful farmer and stockman, of Laclede coun-
ty, Mo., was born in Camden county of the same state, and is the son of
Daniel and Phoebe (McCloud) Fulbright.  Daniel Fulbright was born in
North Carolina, and when about twenty-six years of age he came to Miss-
ouri direct from North Carolina, and first located in Madison county, 
near Old Jackson.  Here he remained but a few years, and then moved to
the Glaize, where he opened up a large farm.  He was the owner of one
negro, who afterward killed his eldest daughter.  Mr. Fulbright was 
first married to Miss Nancy Woolsey, a native of North Carolina, who 
bore him four children, two now living, John and William, both in 
Texas.  After the death of the mother of these children, Mr. Fulbright
married Miss McCloud, a native of Kentucky.  When a girl she ran away 
from home with her little sister, crossed the Mississippi River, and 
after finding a place for her little sister to live, she went with a
family to Laclede county, Mo., where she was married to Mr. Fulbright.
This union resulted in the birth of eight children: Mahala, Martin V.,
James H. (deceased), Merritt C., Daniel L., Leonidas (deceased), Jesse
W. and Samuel H.  The mother of these children died in February, 1879.
The father died December 22, 1856.  They were members of the Christian
church, and he took an active part in church and school affairs.  He 
was a Democrat in his political views.  Martin V. Fulbright was reared
in Laclede county, Mo., and here he has ever since lived.  He served in
Price's army six months, and was at the battle of Lexington and in
several skirmishes.  After the war he returned to the home place, where
he remained until 1882, when he came to the "Goodwin Hollow," where he 
has a good tract of land well under cultivation.  He was married Decem-
ber 15, 1861, to Miss Nancy Cunningham, who was a native of Tennessee,
but who was reared in Kentucky.  She came to Missouri in 1859, and 
located on the Glaize.  To Mr. and Mrs. Fulbright were born two child-
ren, James D. and Mary F.  James D. is married, and lives on a part of
the home place.  He was married to Miss Mary L. Hickman, a native of
Laclede county, Mo., and the daughter of Martin Hickman, one of the
early settlers of this county.  To this union have been born three
children: Louisa, Mastin V. and Joseph.  Mr. Fulbright (subject of this
sketch) is a Democrat politically, and he and wife and son are members
of the Methodist Episcopal church.
