Biographical Sketch of Thomas M. Gibson, Laclede County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Thomas M. Gibson, farmer, stock raiser and fruit grower, of Laclede county, Mo., was born in Greenbrier county, W. Va., September 25, 1824, and is a son of John and Mary Gibson, who were born, reared and married in Virginia, and there spent their days. Both the paternal and mater- nal grandparents were born in the "Emerald Isle," and immigrated to the United States in 1765, locating in Virginia, where they died. Thomas M. Gibson was engaged in farming and stock raising in his native state until 1880, when, thinking to better his condition, he came to South- west Missouri, and located in Laclede county, Mo., where he has a fine farm, containing 162 acres, six miles southeast of Lebanon, where he has since made his home. October 8, 1846, he was married to Miss Nancy S. Young, a native of Monroe county, W. Va., by whom he became the father of the following children: Elizabeth (wife of J. H. Campbell), Mary J. (wife of A. A. Fleshman), Sarah Y. (wife of William White), Rosaline (wife of T. P. Umphries) and James G. (who married Flora Moffat.) In 1862 Mr. Gibson enlisted in the West Virginia volunteer service, and participated in the battles of Lewisburg, Fayetteville and Dry Creek, and served until the close of the war in 1865. Since coming to Missouri Mr. Gibson's labors have met with good success, and his farm, a portion of which is in a high state of cultivation, is princi- pally devoted to raising corn, wheat and oats. In such a section of country as this is admirably adapted to the raising of grain, hogs, cattle, sheep, horses, etc., the energetic citizen is bound to succeed. He is a member of the Agricultural Wheel, and he and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. His father was twice married, the first union resulting in the birth of four children: Eliza and Jane (who are deceased), Lydia (wife of James W. Boyd) and Thomas M. The following are the children born to the second union: William, Mary, John, Robert and Julia A. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
