Biographical Sketch of Mastin Hickman, Laclede County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Mastin Hickman, farmer, of Hooker Township, Laclede county, Mo., was born in Sevier county, Tenn., in 1830, and is the son of Thomas and Sarah (Ward) Hickman, natives of South Carolina and Tennessee, respec- tively. Thomas was left fatherless at an early age, and afterward came with his mother to Tennessee, and settled on a farm east of Knox- ville, where he attained his majority. He then located for himself on a farm, and was a farmer and miller all his life. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and died in 1864. He married Miss Ward, who died in 1849; she was the mother of fifteen children, ten boys and five girls, eight of whom are now living: Charlotta, Sarah J., Lavinia, Charles, James H., Mastin, Frderick and Ahaz (twins). Mr. Hickman was married the second time, and had one daughter, Catherine. To his third union no children were born. Mastin Hickman remained on the home place in Tennessee until twenty-six years of age, after which he went to Missouri, locating in Laclede county, near where he now lives, and to his present location in 1865. Here he has since lived. He served in the State Militia, Federal army, for about two years during the war, and rendered effective and valuable service. He was married January 24, 1863 to Miss Mary A. Tennison, born in Crawford county, Mo., on September 7, 1842, daughter of Joseph S. and Elvira J. (Cooper) Tenni- son, natives of Missouri and Tennessee, respectively. Her father is still living, and makes his home with Mastin Hickman. He was born June 9, 1818, in Missouri, and has always lived in this state with the exception of three months that he spent in Texas. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and is the only one of his brothers and sisters living. He enjoys good health. His wife came to Missouri when a girl, and by her union to Mr. Tennison became the mother of nine children, seven now living: Newman P., Sarah H., Mary A., Thomas J., Elizabeth L., Frances M. and William M. The mother of these children died December 20, 1873. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in early life, but later became a member of the Christian Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Hickman were born thirteen children, ten now living: Sarah J. (wife of G. D. Layman), Mary L. (wife of J. D. Fulbright), Joe Ann (wife of Samuel Lomerick), Emett F., James M., Joseph P., George W., Henry C., John F. and Martha D. Those deceased were named Thomas A., Nathaniel and Charlotta C.
