Biographical Sketch of Christian Hanson, Laclede County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Christian Hanson, merchant at Conway, Mo., was born in Denmark, Decem- ber 15, 1841, bewing a son of Hans Christian and Marian (Martinson) Hanson, who were born in Denmark and were married in 1832. The father was a farmer, and being the eldest son was exempt from military ser- vice. He died in 1873. He and wife became the parents of nine child- ren, six of whom are now living, two being residents of America. Christian grew to manhood in Taarup, Denmark, and after attending school the required number of years, supplemented this with an attend- ance at night school. From 1863 to 1867 he was engaged in traveling throughout the country selling goods, and at the latter date concluded to come to America, and first located in Rolla, Mo., thence to Arling- ton, where he engaged in the general mercantile business. In 1870 he returned to his native land, but went back to his adopted country the same year, and located in Lebanon. The following year he formed a partnership with Hugh McCain, and in 1872 purchased the interest of his partner and embarked in commercial life on his own responsibility, and has continued up to the present date, meeting with flattering success. He was appointed postmaster of Conway in 1872, and ably filled the office until 1886. He is a very large real estate holder, and cultivates more land than any man in the county. He is also an extensive stock breeder. In 1872 he married Miss Sarah S. Kelley, of Lebanon, a daughter of Rev. Kelley, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and by her is the father of four children: Emma, Clare, Sarah and Jennie. Mrs. Hanson belongs to the Lutheran Church. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., a Royal Arch Mason, and is a charter member of the K. T. Commandery. He is Past Worthy Master and Present Master in the A. O. U. W. He is M. W. and Deputy Grand Worthy Chief of the I. O. G. T.; also president of the Union Sunday School Convention. Mrs. Hanson is president of the W. C. T.
