Biographical Sketch of George R. James, Laclede County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** George R. James, stock farmer, on Osage Fork of Gasconade River, was born in Giles county, Tenn., in 1833, and is the son of George and Dicey James, natives of Georgia and North Carolina, respectively. When George R. was four years old the family immigrated to Missouri by wagon and located within one mile of where our subject now lives, and here the father died December 27, 1847. He was born April 20, 1799. His wife was born October 19, 1797, and died July 25, 1869. They were married January 13, 1819, and to their union was born seven children, two now living, William R. and George R. William R. lives on Mill Creek, Osage township, and is engaged in agricultural pursuits. The parents of these children were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. George R. James attained his growth in Laclede county, and assisted his parents on the farm. After the death of his father he took charge of things and lived with his mother until her death. He then took a trip overland to California, where he remained until the fall of 1860, and then returned to the home place by way of New York City, by rail, then to Chicago, thence to Dillon, thence to Rolla, Mo., and from there to the home place by stage. When the war broke out he enlisted in Capt. C. W. Rubey's regiment, and served about two years. At the close of the war he came back to the home place, and after remaining there a short time he came to his present location, where he has resided ever since. He is the owner of a large farm of 1,240 acres with about 700 under cultivation. He was married October 13, 1861, to Miss Susan Q. Honssinger, a native of Laclede county, Mo., born in 1847 and the daughter of Thomas F. Honssinger, who is one of the oldest settlers of the county. To Mr. and Mrs. James were born nine living children: Mary Ellen, wife of John Bowman; George F., who married Emily J. Beard; Quillana E., wife of John R. Wrinkle; William M., Laura D., Lury J., Rosa B., Effie May and Edgar M. Those deceased are Thomas, Isom, Charley W. and an infant.
