The maternal grand- father, Jeremiah Dial, served seven years in the Revolutionary War, and was but sixteen years of age when he entered the service. In 1790 he immigrated to Bedford county, Tenn., and there resided until his death. He was a farmer and school teacher by occupation, and was a well educa- ted man. Jesse Scott, father of our subject, was reared in Tennessee, was a farmer by occupation, and was a soldier in the War of 1812. In 1842 he immigrated to Wright county, Mo., and entered a tract of land, which he labored hard to improve. He died there in 1873. The mother died in 1828. Young Scott was educated in Tennessee, and assisted on the farm until 1839, when his parents moved to Missouri with an ox team and after a six weeks trip landed in what is now Laclede county, but was then Pulaski. They located on Brush Creek when there were but three other families living on the creek, and when the county was not sectionized. He reamined on his farm until 1873, when he moved to Leb- anon, where he has since resided. In 1849 Mr. Scott was elected sheriff, and served four years, being the second sheriff elected after the organization of the county. He was appointed by the county court as swamp land commissioner in 1858, and served until 1860. In 1872 he was elected county collector, and served four years. He was appointed the first assessor of Laclede county, and served one year. He was also appointed county court justice, and served one year, to fill an un- expired term. Mr. Scott is one of the pioneers of Laclede county, and is prominently identified with the interests of the same. He has labored hard during his life, but can now sit down and during his declining years enjoy the fruit of his energy. Mr. Scott is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and he and wife are members of the Christian Church. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
