A. Smith, proprietor of Laclede Roller Mills, and son of Joseph F. and Martha J. Smith, was born in St. Louis, June 5, 1848. He was rear- ed in St. Louis until about twelve years of age, when in 1860 he came with his parents to Lebanon, Mo., and here he has since resided. He attended school after coming here until of age, and during the late war was employed as chief clerk in the provost marshal's office. At the age of twenty-one he took charge of the flour and saw mill which his father had built and owned in Old Lebanon, and operated until 1869. He has since continued the business alone, with the exception of four years, from 1872 to 1876, during which time he had a partner, Mr. J. W. Appling, his brother-in-law. In 1872 he moved the machinery from the old town, having erected a new mill building in the new town of Lebanon and in 1881 pout in the roller process. He now has the best equipped mills in this section. He also runs a saw mill in connection with his flouring mills. He has recently built a band sawmill at Arlington, Mo. at an expense of $6,000, which he is now operating. Mr. Smith's band saw-mill was the first in the State of Missouri to be erected outside of St. Louis. He was married in 1876 to Miss Mattie S. Hubbard, of Springfield, Mo., and by whom he has four children living: Charles T., Homer F., Virgil A. and Pauline Smith. One is deceased, named Arthur Paul (who died June 17, 1886, aged twenty months and ten days). Mr. and Mrs. Smith are members of the Congregational Church. He is one of the enterprising and intelligent business men of Laclede county. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
