Biographical Sketch of Robert N. Young, Laclede County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Robert N. Young, a prominent merchant, postmaster and express agent of Phillipsburgh, Laclede county, Mo., was born in Ripley county, Mo., May 12, 1847, and is a son of Jeremiah and Margaret Ann (Neil) Young, also natives of Ripley county, Mo. The parents removed to Carroll county, Ark., when Robert N. was a child, and afterward went to Franklin county whence they removed again to Baxter county, where they lived until their deaths. The father was accidentally killed, during the late war, by his own party, and died in 1863 at the age of forty-five years. Mrs. Young died in 1862. Both were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. When a young man, Jeremiah Young learned the carpenter's trade becoming very successful, and at the time of his death he owned consid- erable property. Of their family of eight children, four are now living, viz.: Campbell W., a blacksmith by trade, is a resident of Arkansas; Mary C., is the wife of R. O. Hardy, and is a school teacher in Conway, Mo.; Maggie, is the wife of James Hughes, foreman of the woolen mills at Lebanon, Mo. Robert N., the second child in the family and the oldest living, received his education in Arkansas, and after his father's death he went to Springfield and enlisted in Company B, Second Missouri Light Artillery, Federal Service, and served until December 20, 1865. He was then discharged, the war having closed, and arrived in Phillipsburg, Mo., the following Christmas Day, and Laclede county has ever since been his home. After the war he learned the blacksmith's trade, at which he worked for twelve years in different parts of the county. He then located in Phillipsburg and engaged in the mercantile business, starting in with a limited stock of groceries. He now carries a general line of goods, and is doing a good business. He owns the old homestead, in Baxter county, Ark., consisting of 320 acres, a good portion of which is under cultivation, and also a farm in Union township. December 29, 1866, Mr. Young married Sarah T. Popejoy, who was born in Dallas county, Mo., in 1848, and is the daughter of Alexander Popejoy. Two sons have been born to them, Charles J. and Timothy N. In 1871 Mr. Young was appointed postmaster of Phillipsburg, which office he has ever since held, with credit to himself and the satisfaction of the community. He is also ticket agent and express agent of the railroad, and is one of the live and energetic citizens of Phillipsburg. He is a Mason and a member of the G. A.
