D. McCormick stopped by the Lebanon Daily Record on Friday, December 23. Mr. James D. McCormick and his wife Louella talked with a reporter about their upcoming 56th wedding anniversary on Saturday, December 24. On December 24, 1893 a young farmer, James Dempsey McCormick and a lovely young lady, Miss Louella Mizer, rode on horseback to Bennet Springs (now a State Park). The Rev. R. N. Buck, a Baptist minister announced that there would be a baptism performed in the natural springs. There were about 500 people at the service. After the baptismal services James and Louella were happy to have Rev. Buck unite them in marriage. After family and friends congratulated the young couple a wonderful outdoor wedding feast took place. Deer Meat was a special treat. The wedding cake was huge and rather tasty. On Christmas Day an informal dinner was served at the home of James's step- father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. David Fry. The first few months of their marriage James and Louella stayed with Louella's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Allen Mullicane. James and Louella have lived on a farm near Old Bennette Mill Road near highway 64. They reared 10 children: Ethel McCormick Barber, Lois McCormick Shumate, Beulah McCormick Atchley, Margie McCormick Smith, Billy, Earl, Otto, Jack, and Avard McCormick. One son Steven McCormick died in Aug. 1942. James and Louella have 38 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Their large family keeps these two coming and going. While raising their family James and Louella were active in the Free Will Baptist Church at Oak Grove. Since they have grown older James and Louella have kept activities to a mininum. James was active in the local school board for 15 years and was a road commissioner for 22 years. James recently retired from those duties. James and Louella have reached their golden years and are doing well. Additional Comments: Parapharsed from the original article in the Lebanon Daily Record, December 23,1949.
