Was born in St. Louis county, and there raised and educated. In 1873 he came to this county and engaged in farming until 1879, when he moved to Bates City and entered into the drug business under the firm style of Smirl & Haven- ner. October 5, 1870, he was married to Miss Eliza J. Smirl, of Montgomery county, Missouri, by whom he has six children. He is a member of the A. F. & A.
