Was born in Scott county, Illinois, February 18, 1852. His early life was spent on his father's farm; his education obtained in the Winchester high school and in the State Normal Univer- sity, Illinois. For twelve years he taught in the public schools, and a good deal of his time has been devoted to writing for the public on educational subjects; and he is a writer of considerable note. December 25, 1879, he was married to Miss Mary A.
