LILLARD Elias W. Lillard was born March 30, 1842, and died Friday evening, Aug. 19. At age 20 he began teaching in the winter months and farmed in the summer. He continued his teaching for 25 years. He was president of the Durkee, Hawkins and Lillard Mercantile Company for about 20 years, and until the dissolution of the company, after the death of Mr. Hawkins and Mr. Durkee. This business was located on the corner of Fourth and Clark where the Lewis County Motor Co. now stands. When the Bank of Lewis County was organized in 1884, Mr. Lillard was elected a director. In 1893 he became president of the institution and continued in that office for more than 30 yeard. Mr. Lillard was a trustee of LaGrange College from 1885 until the removal of the college to Hannibal. When about 15 years old he became a member of the Baptist church located near his home and known as the Wyaconda Church. He always retained his membership with the congregation. For more than 40 years he drove the 3 miles to the county church every Sunday and for many years taught a class in the Sunday school. GEORGE MANIFOLD George Manifold died at his residence in Canton Aug. 18. Mr. Manifold taught in Bethany College, W. Va., and at Culver-Stockton College. THE LEWIS COUNTY JOURNAL AUGUST 24, 1888 COL. GEORGE W. GIVENS Col. George W. Givens, a former resident of this county, and son of Mathy Givens who formerly lived near this place, died suddenly last week, while attending “Wooten Wells,” a famous watering place in Texas.
