According to their surviving children & their families there was a funeral once a week for four weeks, It is believed that their deaths were caused by contaminated drinking water, which was loc ed in the field behind the present home of Dan Bowling on NN Highway, or by some other highly contagious disease, possibly erysipelas, The three remaining children were raised by Aylia’ parents Wm & Sarah White who lived on the old Shelton Farm on the south side of J Highway near the NN intersection.” White, George Washington 1841-3 Jul 1879 S/O Wm & Sarah (Baker) *Note This is the only stone left in the cemetery. *White, James J. 15 Dec 1822@ NC -25 Apr 1888 S/O Wm & Sarah (Baker) H/O Mariah Frary *White, Mariah 7 May 1823@NY-20 Jan 1893 (nee Frary) W/O Jas J *White, Sarah 1798 @Ashe Co. NC-May 1879 W/O Wm. *White, William 1796@Rowan Co NC-Oct 1859 S/O Luke White (Rev War Patriot) & Elizabeth Yoakley. Note: As late as the 1920’s there were known to be stones for Wm, Sarah and other family members on this cemetery. However the cemetery was destroyed in mid 1930-40 Only stone left is for George Washington White, youngest son of Sarah & William. Cemetery is under a huge sycamore tree on the hill. The tree stands on the hill with no other trees around it. Please get permission from owner John Menteer.
