Written: 1892 Recorded: September 1892 There was a Missouri inquest result in 1866 showing that John Mansfield's wife, Sarah, did indeed stab him to death. Case 1: Sequatchie County, Chancery Court Minutes, Sept. 8, 1892, Microfilm Roll 5, pp. 535+. Case of W.H. and A. L. Mansfield vs. James Mansfield, Rhoda Rollins, Mima J. Lytle, Betty Rogers, John Mansfield, Robert Mansfield, Nancy Loyd, Rachel Renfroe, Ruth Brewit, Susy Minnic, Norman Mansfield, Sallie Clark, Mary King, Willie Brooks, John Carlton, Elizabeth Grounds, Nancy Brewitt, Robert Mansfield Jr., Nancy Dunn, Martha Green. That John Mansfield in 1858 sold land on Brush Creek to William Heard. That the deed has since been lost. Heard sold the land to W.H. and A.L. Mansfield. That John Mansfield, the father, grandfather, and ancestor of the above defendants, is dead, leaving them as his only heirs. All have been served with process returnable to the July rules. Mansfield and Elizabeth Rogers (formerly Elizabeth Mansfield), heirs of John Mansfield deceased, appoint Norman Mansfield of Madison County, Missouri ., their attorney re estate of John Mansfield. Signed also by W.S. Rogers. John J. Lowery, wit. April 28, 1873: receipt from W.S. Rogers and spouse Elizabeth for $25 from L.W. Revelle, admin., for claim as distributee of the estate of John Mansfield dec., by Norman Mansfield, attorney. Final settlement of the estate of John Mansfield, dec., January, 1871: payments to heirs N. Mansfield, Louisa Brake, Susan Davenport, Thomas J. Mansfield, Thomas Clark and wife, Nancy A. Mansfield, Rachel Mansfield, John Mansfield, James Mansfield, Robert Mansfield, Elizabeth ---, Rhoda Brooks. Later list names John's heirs as Susan (now Mrs. Menecke), Rachel Renfro (spouse of William R. Renfro of Knob Lick, Missouri ), James Mansfield, John Mansfield, Sarah Clark (spouse of Thomas Clark), Katie Carlton (spouse of Lark Carlton, she deceased, leaving Elizabeth Brevett spouse of Jos. Brevett and Nancy Grounds spouse of George Grounds), Jeff Mansfield, Nancy Mansfield. Clark and Sarah E. Clark his spouse formerly Sarah Mansfield, petition against Sarah, widow of John Mansfield dec. Robert Mansfield also petitions. Deed Book M442: Jan., 1870 Thomas Clark and Sarah Ann Clark , Sarah "child of the late John Mansfield", of Madison County, Missouri . Deed Book N146:Dec. 1870, John J.S. Carlton and Sarah Jane Carlton and Josia Bruett and Elizabeth his spouse formerly Elizabeth Carlton, child of Catherine Carlton, formerly Catherine Mansfield, daughter of the late John Mansfield, all of Madison County, . Cemetery records show Sarah A. Mansfield, daughter of John and Nancy Crissop, b. April 4, 1836, d. April 12, 1881. She married Pleasant Crissop on June 26, 1860, in Madison County, and married John Mansfield there on Jan. 10, 1864, indicating that Gemima (Russell) Mansfield had died. There are various other deeds concerning this court case, which /i willsend later by snail mail. residence records show Robert Mansfield in Madison Co. in 1850 and John Mansfield there in 1860, both previously of Bledsoe County, TN . Thomas Jefferson Mansfield got a grant there in August, 1860. John Mansfield and spouse Cela were also there in 1860, as was Larkin and Catherine Carlton. In 1869-1872 Thomas Jefferson Mansfield was in Sequatchie County, TN , Dist. 8, but by 1880 was back in Madison County, Missouri . A note in the SOUTHERN STANDARD in 1886 states that Rev. Jeff Mansfield of Smartts Station preached near Altamont. An 1888 note in the paper states that Miss Rhoda Mansfield of Smartts Station visited Robert A. Mansfield at Viola.
