The Hannibal Journal August 30, 1849
"The Palmyra Tragedy"

The arguments in the case of John S. Wise for the killing of Thos. B. Hart, 
were closed on Saturday before the examining Court, and en Monday, the 
Justices terminated the trial by refusing bail and committing Mr. Wise to 
prison. We understand the Counsel for the defence, intend making application 
for a writ of "Habeas Corpus" for the release of the prisoner, from 
confinement.
