Marion County, MO Deeds - John Berry > John Ridd & Rufus Matthews Berry to Ridd and Mathews: Know all men by these presents that I John Berry of the County of Marion State of Missouri have this day bargained and sold for a consideration herein and after mentioned and the sum of five dollars in hand paid a certain negro girl named Caroline aged about 13 years and a certain negro boy named Henry aged about 17 years to John Ridd and Rufus Mathews of said County and I hereby convenant that both of said slaves are sound in body and mind and agree to warrant and defend the title to said slaves to the said John Ridd and Rufus Mathews against the claim of all persons whatsoever - this conveyance subject to nevertheless to the following condition that whereas I the said John Berry have this day procured a note to be discounted at the Branch of the Bank of the State of Missouri at Palymyra for my accomodation for the sum of two hundred dollars payable four months after the date thereof to the said Bank or order and upon which said note the said Ridd and Mathews are joint makers with myself now if I shall well and truly pay said sum of two hundred dollaars then this conveyance shall be void but if the said John Ridd and Rufus Mathews or either of them shall have to pay any part of said note or any of the renewals provided the same shall be renewed according to the customs and usage of said Bank then this deed to remain in full force and effect witness my hand and seal this the 16th day of August A.D. 1846 John Berry ("Seal" encircled) State of Missouri} County of Marion, } Be it remembered that on this 16th day of August 1846 personally appeared before me John P.
