Barbour and Dryer Family Bible Records 1843 to 1934 - Dallas, Hickory, & Polk Counties, Missouri The Family Record sections from three family Bibles are abstracted and supplemented. The original pages belong to Opal Shacklette who received them from her Uncle Marvin Estel Dryer in Louisburg, Dallas, Missouri in 1964 or 1965. Opal, in a letter to Anne B. Hood in September of 1992, enclosed copies of them, explained some of the notes that she had added, and shared her memories of many of these relatives. Anne then wrote an abstract of the data from the Family Records. This writing is derived from Anne's abstract, copies of the Family Records, and our genealogy files. Calvin Doub. I. THE FAMILY RECORD SECTION FROM THE BARBOUR FAMILY BIBLE Two pages from this Bible were originally about 8 X 10.5 or 11 inches, but are now 7.7 X 10.3 inches. They are printed with wide and intricate border designs and are headed: PARENT'S RECORD, BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, and DEATHS. They came to Marvin Estel Dryer from his parents; his mother, Mary Ellen (Barbour) Dryer having inherited the Bible, or its two record pages, from her mother. The most likely first entry date is 16 March 1843; the last was 22 March 1875. From these handwritten entries: PARENT'S RECORD. FATHER. Bro. Barbour was converted in 1841, and a year later joined the M. E. Church, and was steadfast unto the end of his life. A faithful class leader for nineteen years, beloved by his brethren and rev- erenced by the ungodly. He suffered much dur- ng his last illness, but was patient and resigned, and passed away triumphantly to heaven. Rev. E. F. Yeager preached an appropriate discourse from, "I have fought a good fight," &c., which was truly applicable in his case. ISAAC ENTWISLE BIRTHS. Copies of them were sent to Anne B. Hood by Opal Shacklette who now has the Bible with it’s title page. The four pages of family records were sent to Anne on 1 Sep 1992 with a letter referenced to page numbers and notes that she had added. In the following transcription these will be in brackets: {by Opal}. The copy of the title page was sent to Anne on 13 Apr 1994 with a letter in which Opal explains how she determined that the Bible was printed after 1890. The entries of events prior to 1897 are in uniform handwriting and were entered on or after 21 Nov 1896 when Lester Ray Dryer died [page 2]. The last entry date is 18 Mar 1934 [page 7]. This Bible, probably obtained in 1896 by Daniel Boone Dryer and Mary Ellen (Barbour) Dryer, was passed on to Marvin Estel Dryer and Virginia Ruth (Carter) Dryer on D. B.'s death at their home in Louisburg, Dallas Co., MO. Each face of the four pages is headed "FAMILY RECORD" and subheaded GRANDPARENTS, PARENTS, and CHILDREN: front face, and MISCELLANEOUS: back face. THE FAMILY RECORD SECTION FROM THE SMALL FAMILY BIBLE OF DANIEL BOONE DRYER, AND MARY ELLEN BARBOUR This record section, one sheet of paper; folded and bound to form two pages about 4.7 X 6.8 inches, is from a small Bible of Daniel and Mary E. Dryer. Each non-numbered page is printed with a double-lined border and header, and is headed "FAMILY RECORD". The four pages are sub-headed: MARRIAGES, BIRTHS, BIRTHS, & DEATHS; in the same order they would be numbered. The entries record dates from 3 Aug 1846, D. B.'s birth date, to 8 Jan 1886, W. W. Dryer's marriage, in uniform handwriting; this indicates a beginning before 1886. Mary Ellen's birth date is listed immediately after Lydia Tharp's. This indicates that these entries were made after Mary married D. B. in 1874. The entries were probably made after the birth of Leona Grace in 1883 since this entry is the last in the uniform handwriting. There is a small but significant discrepancy between 20 Sep 1874, recorded here as Mary's marriage date, and 30 Sep 1874 as recorded after 1895 in the large Dryer/Barbour Bible, and even corrected there from "Twenty" to "Thirty". That Mary wrote these entries and entered the date incorrectly, is unlikely. Other sources confirm the 30th date. D. B. could not write. This sheet from the small Bible came to us in the same way the pages from the large Bible did, but without the Bible. Opal Shacklette referred to them as: "large pages from ...[and with] ... the old family Bible ... and the sheet from a smaller Bible ... given her by Uncle Estil and Aunt Ruth in '64 or '65... when visiting them in Louisburg, Missouri". This family record seems to be for Daniel Boone Dryer and Lydia Jane Tharp since their’s is the first marriage recorded. Entries beginning 8 Jan 1886 are of a spontaneous appearance while those of 20 May 1883 and of prior dates appear to have been transcribed or possibly dictated. This leads to the conclusion that the entries were first made between 1883 and 1886 for the family records of D. B. and Mary Ellen Barbour. The entries in this smaller Bible were then copied to the larger Bible about 1896. TRANSCRIBED HANDWRITTEN ENTRIES FROM THE SMALL FAMILY BIBLE MARRIAGES. { page 9 } Daniel B. Dryer and Lyda J. Tharp was married Nov th/2 1865. [Daniel Boone Dryer & Lydia Jane Tharp] Daniel B. Dryer and Mary E. [X'd "D"] Barbour was married Sept the/20 1874. [probably the 30th] William Wesley Dryer and Nancy E. Hale was married January the/8 1886. [First writing style change] J. S. Dryer And Burtha May Parker Was Married Dec. the/26 1889. [Jeremiah Smith Dryer and Bertha] The placement of Mary Ellen here indicates that these entries were made after her marriage in 1874 or even after her daughter Leona Grace was born in 1883 but before William W.’s marriage entry on 8 Jan 1886.
